Proven Steps to Solve Performance Problems

I would recommend the book "Solving Employee Performance Problems" by Bruce, Hampel, and Lamont to any HR person or manager who wants to improve the way performance feedback and appraisals are done in their company. The authors share their experience from various corporate HR and consulting roles. They do this by providing lots of tips and worksheet examples in almost every chapter. A few references the reader gets from this book which they can refer back to often include: the 3-step onboarding process, a simple 4-step model for performance management, 8-steps to preventing performance problems, team assessment worksheet, motivating others worksheet, 8 tools for problem-solving, 7-steps to performance improvement, 7 ideas for performance building, and a performance improvement worksheet for measuring Individual employee improvement. Plus there are a few case studies and a variety of easy-to-follow examples that include: 19 common behavior problem examples, 30 conversation starters for addressing performance, and 14 examples for coaching and development plans. The book is well worth the price. As a supervisor, I would buy it for chapters 4 and 6 alone. These authors give you a full 10 chapters comprising almost 250 pages of very helpful information!

Great HR handbook

Staff is the largest expense for most companies. Maximizing return from staff expense is a highly complex problem. People by nature are complex.

I tend to prefer books with more positive titles (although bringing out the best is positive). I wonder if thinking of things as a problem can become self fulfilling.

The first chapter has a perfect title "Set Expectations to Avoid Performance Problems". It is so much easier to not have a problem in the first place.

The book goes on to set out a model of performance management that includes things like assess, set expectation and monitor.

The book has tons of examples with sample conversations that could be useful for any manager.

I often find performance challenges can be a result of people being in the wrong job. The ideal is to find them a position that more closely aligns to their passion. Passion creates engagement and then performance.

One thing I like to do (although clearly am not perfect at) is coach, train and mentor. Often performance is a result of lack of understanding of how to do the job well.

It would be great if the boss was all knowing and knew the correct answer to everything but that is not the case. I actually think we suffer from too much meddling by bosses that does not add value. I much prefer to set the goals and let people do their jobs. Not doing that can limit the size an organization can grow to.

This is a must have for any management or HR library

Highly practical and inspirational guide

Once again, Anne Bruce has delivered a highly practical "must have" guide for managing employees--providing both drill-down tactics, as well as inspirational context, to infuse leaders with an unprecedented passion and skillset for improving the workplace. She addresses a wide range of very specific performance issues which managers regularly face, and delivers a very prescriptive solution for addressing these problems. She goes beyond addressing performance problems, however, and delivers tools for managers to proactively engage employees, leading to increased loyalty and retention rates (which have been shown to translate to improved customer service scores, sales revenue, and overall business success... not to mention a higher workplace morale). Anne shows how an internally engaged employee can improve an overall organization, and she shows how to create an environment that fosters this level of commitment and positive energy--thus preventing future performance issues. I have begun using her approaches as I manage remote staff, and have seen excellent results. Anne's approach and language is fresh yet ageless, as she delivers solid solutions for leading even the most difficult or insubordinate employee. As a side bonus, the book motivates managers themselves to live and work more positively!
