It's 1968, and CIA officer Peter Ivorson is in deep trouble. Transferred from Viet Nam aftera barely-failed assassination attempt left his nerves in tatters, Ivorson is hoping for an uneventful tour of duty in sleepy, small-town Vientiane. The secret war in Laos is in full swing, however, and Ivorson's new boss needs a big win to further his own career. He assigns Ivorson to steal the North Vietnamese diplomatic code, a mission at which both CIA and NSA have failed for years. In addition to the impossible assignment, the USAID personnel officer, whose job is to protect Ivorson's cover, can't stand either the CIA or Ivorson, and his all-time best agent is shot to death under his eyes. Worst of all, the French-Vietnamese beauty Ivorson is trying to get into bed is really working for the North Vietnamese Embassy intel chief. He killed Ivorson's predecessor, and intends to do the same for Ivorson. Balked and stalked at every turn, Ivorson keeps on trying, but by the time he's waist deep in the swamp behind the NVN Embassy, everyone in town is out to get him, including his own boss. Ivorson is on his own.

The Clumsy Tiger
By Dickie
A rousing good yarn of 1970s espionage, intrigue, betrayal, and unscrupulous ambition; set in the CIA Station in Vientiane, Laos before the Communist take-over. A real page-turner! Mr. Melton paints his characters with wide brush strokes, in vivid colors.

The principal protagonist, Peter Ivorson is what might best be described as "The Clumsy Tiger." Picture the supremely powerful, stealthy, king of the jungle, creeping up, with twitching tail, on his unsuspecting prey. At the crucial moment, as he starts his leap, his foot slips, and he falls gracelessly flat on his face in the mud.

Ivorson does all the James Bond sorts of things; from torrid love scenes to hair-raising escapes, victories against unbeatable odds and vanquishing of invincible foes. But he is all too human, and accomplishes all these marvelous things in spite of his propensity to do just about everything wrong. Ivorson is certainly a memorable and even likable character. He is absolutely not the man I'd want to be pitted against. But on the other hand, I'm not at all sure I'd want him on my side either. The phrase "loose-canon-on-deck" springs to mind. Champa Flowers flirts with farcical comedy, but in essence remains a spy thriller, albeit with a substantial dash of tongue-in-cheek humor. All-in-all, it's a much-better-than-average good read. I look forward to the further adventures of the intrepid Ivorson.

A real page-turner!
By S. Adams
It takes a fast-paced book to get me to pick up a novel and stay interested, and this one had me hooked from the beginning. It lived up to its promise of being an engaging spy thriller: an intriguing plot with a good balance of action, humor, and even some romance (well, lust) thrown in; just enough character development to get the reader connected with the principals in the story but not so much as to bog down the momentum of the plot. And what momentum there is as the reader follows protagonist CIA agent Peter Ivorson on his adventures in Laos...it's a race to beat the enemy at the world's second oldest profession, which turns into a struggle for Iverson's survival. There are some surprising twists in the road along the way. The historical context is informative and accurate; descriptions made me feel as though I were witnessing the action. Snatch up a copy and enjoy!

Thrilling
By RJ
This is a great, well written Vietnam war era story. (It reminded me a little of "A Station in the Delta," by John Cassidy). James Franco should play CIA officer Peter Ivorson in the movie version. Ivorson is of very much the American hero here and he proves the old saying that "nothing is more dangerous than an American with good intentions." Overcoming adversity at every turn, Ivorson is a man on an important mission -- let's hope there are more adventures for Ivorson to tackle in the future.
