Carving Miniature Duck Decoys

The book is a large sized book primarily designed to give minimal instructions for carving decoys of common ducks. This is NOT a "how to whittle" book by any means. The writer assumes that you know how to use a carving knife already. The pages are of rather heavy paper that can be cut out or the staples removed so that you can use them to make your own patterns to carve the birds. Which is fairly standard for many books of this type. I used a photocopyer to copy the patterns so that I did not destroy the book ( I have a phobia about destroying books! Too many readings of Ferenheit 451 as a child I guess) I started by carving a Mallard and a wood duck. The Mallard took only a few hours of whittling with my X-Acto to get to reasonable completion level. The scale is about right for hand sized carving. A pocket knife or X-acto is perfect. The only place the book "fails" for me is in the design of the coloration of the birds. I know little about wild birds and would like some bettter guidance in this respect, though he has included two paces of color plates of completed carvings and suggests that the reader research the birds in other books. Not a bad idea at that. If you are interested in carving, this is a pretty good way to start in with miniature decoys. For the more mercinary of you, in my travels last week, I saw a slightly larger decoy in a store priced at $125. Where's my carving knife?

Good book if you've carved a duck before.

This book is a good book only if you've carved a duck before because it does not tell you what kind of knife to use, also it does not tell you to draw the basic front and back of the duck on the botton as guide lines. If you want to start carving buy the book "How to carve wood". It tells you how to carve a antique duck very clear. It also tells you what tools you need, and even how to sharpen them. After you purchase the book how to carve wood, then buy this book carving miniature duck decoys for patterns, and better techniues. Even though carving minauture duck decoys has good techniques it does not explain basic info. Buy the standard B bo-t handcrafted knife from woodcraft.com that is the best knife for basic carving. Within one week had two miniatures completed. I thought the scale was a bit small so I had the images enlarged 15% and redid the measurements. Will probably do both sizes. Better be able to carve and paint in order to take advantage of this book.

In the Army I served with many capable women from Officers (senior ranking) to lower enlisted they did their duty well. Charles Rangel in 2003 passed a law HR 5741 that would include women in the next draft if Congress ever wants to draft people into the military. I support women in a variety or roles especially in support roles in the military. This book has numerous examples through out history of their value to civilization and the accomplishments they made.

Creating a positive attitude about yourself and your dating

Syrtash's book, He's Just Not Your Type, is a positive approach to dating that will help you feel more confident about your dating life. There are two very important points she drives home to her readers.

1) If you feel unsuccessful about finding mister right at this point in your life, that means you have successfully avoided settling down with mister wrong to become just another divorce statistic. This is a positive!

2) But, if you feel negative toward dating, it is time to take positive steps toward your own acceptance behavior, with men whom you may not consider your exact type.

He's Just Not Your Type provides exercises that can help you generate a realistic outlook on your world as a whole. Of primary importance is eliminating the words "should" and "can't" from your spoken language, but even more important, from your MENTAL vocabulary. These two words she calls "gremlins." He's Just Not Your Type would have you use cognitive therapy on a regular basis to change negative thinking.

To do this, you write down a list of negatives that you regularly say to yourself and to others. Next, you write down positive rebukes for each negative.

NEGATIVE THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS
____"I should be a better conversationalist."
____"I can't go on a blind date,"
____"I can't just leave this poor man."

POSITIVE REBUKES
____"I will be a better conversationalist by reading the editorial page of my daily newspaper so I'm informed about fascinating topics to discuss with my date."
____"I will go on a blind date because every date is somewhat blind. I want to learn more about different kinds of men because it will help me understand them."
____"I will end my current relationship by telling him it is time for me to move on because although he's nice person, I'm not ready for a permanent or serious relationship."

He's Just Not Your Type reveals that all too often, the women she counsels toward dating success have an idealized image of some perfect male they are seeking. Sure, they may have dated such a man, only to find disappointment and sadness when one or the other party terminates the relationship.

While following Syrtash's steps for becoming a positive thinker, she would have you set SMART goals for your dating. By this she means your goals are Specific--not generalized ideals; they are objective and Measurable; they are goals for which you can make yourself Accountable; they are Realistic and doable; and they have a specific completion Timeline.

"I promised my brother (sister, girlfriend, mother) that I will have at least four dates this month" is such a goal. It is Specific--four dates; it is Measurable--either you do or don't date; you've made yourself Accountable to someone (brother, sister, mother); it is Realistic depending on your lifestyle, and you must meet a Timeline--a one month period.

All in all, He's Just Not Your Type can be a great book for making you feel better about your lifestyle. But it must be taken seriously. You must perform the exercises Syrtash outlines for you. For example, on page fourteen, there is a paper and pencil exercise to help you destroy mental gremlins. If you sharpen a pencil, sit down, and take the time to complete the exercise, you can eliminate negative thoughts that manipulate your thinking, especially if you do this regularly.

The same is true for all the exercises in the book. Rather than simply read each chapter with mental reservations saying, "I should be practicing this exercise" or "I can't do this exercise now because I don't have time," you must stand up and take command, "I will walk to my desk, I will pick up a pencil and I will do what the book says--I will do it right here and right now."

I would recommend He's Just Not Your Type to any woman who feels sullen about her life and the choices she's made regarding dating. It is extremely easy to read with plenty of real life examples from Syrtash's own work with people. It can help you find satisfaction with men, who may not measure up to your irrational ideal type, but with whom you might establish an on-going, friendship--possibly a deep, long-term, loving bond.

More Than What You're Thinking

Four pages into this book, I started texting all of my friends who I thought needed to read this as much as I did. To be honest, when I first heard the title, I expected the book to be about settling. There is this natural defensive reaction when we are asked to look beyond our "types." How can we help what we are attracted to? But what I love about Andrea's perspective is that it is the exact OPPOSITE of settling. Her book is so hopeful. It is about actually finding HAPPINESS in dating and marriage. Instead of beating ourselves up over our "shoulds" (like I really "should" marry this guy), one of the simple ideas that I now ask myself since reading her book is, "Who would I rather be trapped in a foxhole with?"

So many of us date either the people we think we "should," as in the guy who looks great on paper, or... if we have a bit of a rebellious streak in us, the guy who we "shouldn't." What if we looked at dating in a different way? What if it's about who we love to be with? You think the title might be more about "thinking" our way through dating more sensibly (ie. settling again), but Andrea encourages us to "feel." How do we feel around this person? Do we feel more ourselves or do we become unrecognizable? (You crazy facebook stalkers know who you are.) She is not asking us to settle, she is actually encouraging us to do the very opposite. Find what REALLY makes us happy!

The other unexpected thing for me in reading this is how fun dating has been since. So many of us can become so negative about dating. But if you go into it with the attitude of, I wonder how I'm going to be around this "non-type"? Instead of writing off guys on that initial reaction, our dates, even those that don't turn into relationships, or even second dates, are just released from that pressure cooker of expectation. It allows us to genuinely get to know people and actually look forward to the surprise that new relationships can be. And positivity generates positivity. I used to just dread those dates I knew would end badly. But they no longer do, only because there is a genuineness to the interactions I have with each one. It is not wrong to not feel what you're supposed to feel with a guy who looks great on paper, or for that matter, looks just hot! And for the guy I wouldn't normally think I was attracted to, the dates are just met with openness that can lead to somewhere unexpected.

So in sum, the best thing about this book is it is a lifegiving type of dating read that leaves you feeling optimistic and open. And I believe will ultimately lead many of us to much happier marriages, this coming from someone who once married because I "should" or if you asked my parents, my "shouldn't."

The best advice you'll ever get!

This really is an eye-opener and crucial to help change your prespective. For years I couldn't understand why I attracted abusers who ultimately cheated when I knew I was seeking good guys. This book really took the blinders off and since reading it I have begun dating the most amazing man who is definitly not my type and I never would have looked twice at him before reading this book. This is nothing against him, he is amazing! Just wasn't my normal type, which is a great thing! He is everything I ever wanted and never realized because I was attracted to the wrong guys before. I highly recommend reading this if you're single at all!

Nice Technical Manual

An excellent technical manual, or guide for someone desiring to set up a small commercial winery, but not for the beginner or aspiring home wine maker. There are several other books available on the topic of home wine making which cover the basics and have excellent recipes to get started. This book does cover the complete gamut of wine making from grape varieties, their attributes, and how they are grown, to the fermenting, all of the equipment and chemicals used in commercial wine making, aging, bottling, and storage.

Very good reference book, first published in 1985 it is referenced in many newer books on wine making. Lots of technical information and practical examples in the text. I found it easy to read and understand. Buy it if you want to better understand the processes in making wine and correcting/preventing faults in your wine.

For 30 years Frank McCourt taught high school English in New York City and for much of that time he considered himself a fraud. During these years he danced a delicate jig between engaging the students, satisfying often bewildered administrators and parents, and actually enjoying his job. He tried to present a consistent image of composure and self-confidence, yet he regularly felt insecure, inadequate, and unfocused. After much trial and error, he eventually discovered what was in front of him (or rather, behind him) all along--his own experience. "My life saved my life," he writes. "My students didn't know there was a man up there escaping a cocoon of Irish history and Catholicism, leaving bits of that cocoon everywhere." At the beginning of his career it had never occurred to him that his own dismal upbringing in the slums of Limerick could be turned into a valuable lesson plan. Indeed, his formal training emphasized the opposite. Principals and department heads lectured him to never share anything personal. He was instructed to arouse fear and awe, to be stern, to be impossible to please--but he couldn't do it. McCourt was too likable, too interested in the students' lives, and too willing to reveal himself for their benefit as well as his own. He was a kindred spirit with more questions than answers: "Look at me: wandering late bloomer, floundering old fart, discovering in my forties what my students knew in their teens."

Starred Review. This final memoir in the trilogy that started with Angela's Ashes and continued in 'Tis focuses almost exclusively on McCourt's 30-year teaching career in New York City's public high schools, which began at McKee Vocational and Technical in 1958. His first day in class, a fight broke out and a sandwich was hurled in anger. McCourt immediately picked it up and ate it. On the second day of class, McCourt's retort about the Irish and their sheep brought the wrath of the principal down on him. All McCourt wanted to do was teach, which wasn't easy in the jumbled bureaucracy of the New York City school system. Pretty soon he realized the system wasn't run by teachers but by sterile functionaries. "I was uncomfortable with the bureaucrats, the higher-ups, who had escaped classrooms only to turn and bother the occupants of those classrooms, teachers and students. I never wanted to fill out their forms, follow their guidelines, administer their examinations, tolerate their snooping, adjust myself to their programs and courses of study." As McCourt matured in his job, he found ingenious ways to motivate the kids: have them write "excuse notes" from Adam and Eve to God; use parts of a pen to define parts of a sentence; use cookbook recipes to get the students to think creatively. A particularly warming and enlightening lesson concerns a class of black girls at Seward Park High School who felt slighted when they were not invited to see a performance of Hamlet, and how they taught McCourt never to have diminished expectations about any of his students. McCourt throws down the gauntlet on education, asserting that teaching is more than achieving high test scores. It's about educating, about forming intellects, about getting people to think. McCourt's many fans will of course love this book, but it also should be mandatory reading for every teacher in America. And it wouldn't hurt some politicians to read it, too. (Nov. 15)

The pathos McCourt created in his first two memoirs just may be wearing thin. While some critics thought Teacher Man focused, fresh, and exciting, others saw a self-deprecating author at work, his prose littered with clich�s. No doubt Teacher Man is darkly entertaining: what other teacher during class would ask children to write suicide notes or describe their own murderous thoughts? But too many anecdotes about McCourt’s childhood, sexual adventures, and marriage (all found in his previous books) often disembody his poignant, life-learning teaching experiences from their context. Still, the memoir rings true for teachers in its depictions of daily classroom trials, and McCourt’s honesty and storytelling gifts remain unsurpassed.

Frank tells it like it was.

Brief, frank, to the point and telling. I was a bit put off by the scene changes but the author's ability to tell the reader how he felt when he goofed up was heart warming. Too few people admit their weak points and tell others about them. A good book with an interesting writing technique and a story worth reading.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any better than "Angela's Ashes", along came "'Tis". Just when I thought it couldn't get any better than "'Tis", along came "Teacher Man".

In "Teacher Man", McCourt is no longer haunted by the images of his dismal childhood in Limerick. His vision is no longer obscured by all those "dark clouds" that were ever a part of his being in the other memoirs as he endeavored to find his niche.

In "Teacher Man" he is totally immersed in the sometimes chaotic, sometimes enchanting, sometimes frustrating but always challenging world of a classroom filled with that most curious of creatures: the adolescent.

In that world, he not only finds his voice, he finds his heart, he finds his soul,he finds his passion. And that, has made all the difference.

"Teacher Man" is a book that will surely resonate with anyone,who,like "moi", has ever experienced life as a high school teacher. But what of those who have never embraced the profession? To that I would respond that "Teacher Man" will also resonate with anyone who has ever been a high school student. And weren't we all?

I first saw this book at my wife's eye doctor and was very interested with some of what I read and its format.On the 2nd visit I got all the info I needed and purchased it on Amazon. It is used but you would never know it because it looks like new.Great book and came in about a week from "England".If your interested in history this is the book for you.
