This collection of riffs on familiar Mother Goose favorites is irresistibly sinister, combining darkly mutated rhymes with subtly surreal illustrations to delicious effect. Wheeler casts Spinster Goose as the headmistress of a reform school for naughty children and reimagines everyone from Lucy Locket to Wee Willie Winkie as her ne�er-do-well pupils. The rhymes themselves take great liberties with their predecessors and may require some practice before they trip off the tongue. But their cracked and crooked charm merits the effort. For her part, Blackall applies her typically sweet-natured style in surprising and occasionally disturbing ways (the children, for example, are all similar-looking, except that some of them, inexplicably, have animal heads). A particularly tidy, straightforward book design makes for a nice foil, against which the wicked rhymes and unsettling images really sing. Witty, charming, subversive take on Mother Goose rhymes

I think this is a highly original, witty, well-illustrated book of children's poetry. I do think the readers of it need to have at least some basic knowledge of the original Mother Goose rhymes/tales in order to appreciate their subversive cousin poems, given here. I'd recommend this to first grade through sixth grade. Adults will enjoy it, also. These are fun to read aloud.

Some of the poems are short and require no explanation ["The Hair Twirler"], but some are longer and more sophisticated ["Spinster Goose" actually has some sophisticated syntax and vocabulary: e.g., abhor, mottled, sordid, bleak.] There are poems which are good for a quick laugh ["The Gum-Chewer" is such a gum-chewing fanatic that she explodes her bubble all over her face]; there are poems which are social commentary ["The Swearer" is a portrait of someone who "bleats"/curses all the time, even in front of little kids].

I also liked how some of these, like the original Mother Goose rhymes, were cautionary tales with dark humor. My favorite poem was "Student of the Week" ["Monday's child insulted the tutors. / Tuesday's child hacked all the computers..."]. Highly recommended.

Those who think dinosaurs are nature’s failed experiment with slow-witted, shambling, overgrown lizards will quickly find their minds changed by Naish (Tetrapod Zoology blog, Scientific American) and Barrett (merit researcher, the Natural History Museum, London). In plain language, albeit hindered by passive voice, the authors resurrect fleet-footed, sometimes feathered and festooned, possibly warm-blooded creatures, some of which were direct ancestors of modern birds. Naish and Barrett detail dinosaur anatomy; phylogeny and cladistics; the adaptations that made these Mesozoic giants successful for eons; and maniraptoran theropod dinosaurs’ relation to birds. They carefully describe functional morphology, paleoecology, and other methods by which paleontologists reconstruct the past. Images and captions work seamlessly with and enhance the text. However, the authors provide no references to other scientists’ efforts. They also fail to translate fully most Latin names. This resource complements several slightly older titles, such as M.K. Brett-�Surman and Thomas R. Holtz Jr.’s The Complete Dinosaur and John Pickrell’s Flying Dinosaurs: How Fearsome Reptiles Became Birds, while Stephen L. Brusatte’s Dinosaur Paleobiology offers a more technical treatment. More than 1,000 dinosaur species have been named, so describing for laypersons the attributes of this large and complex group of animals is a daunting task, but paleontologists Naish and Barrett largely succeed in this extensively illustrated volume. They provide ample background material demonstrating some of the techniques scientists use to gain a deeper understanding of the evolutionary relationships, anatomy, physiology, behavior, and community ecology of extinct animals. The authors regularly explain how the views of scientists have changed in the face of a constantly growing set of fossils and new methods of analysis. For example, they assert that what had previously been described as a miniature version of Tyrannosaurus rex, a dwarf dinosaur called Nanotyrannus, is actually a juvenile T. rex. Similarly, they reassess the origin of flight in birds as well as the shape of the fleshy parts of many dinosaur faces, concluding that the “standard” interpretations might not be correct. The book’s least successful aspect is the overly detailed and technical chapter on dinosaur cladistics, in which the authors attempt to build a full family tree of all of the subgroups of dinosaurs. The Dinosaur at Your Bird Feeder

The last time I checked in with dinosaurs was in the 1960s sometime, when I was in grade school. Things have changed since then.

It's surprisingly difficult to find books about dinosaurs for adult readers who are not science-oriented. This book by British scientists Darren Naish and Paul Brett is just what I wanted. It's written in clear language and defines the scientific terms you need to know. It goes into many aspects of dinosaur study and it's just fascinating. For instance, when the dinosaurs lived (for over 100 million years, so quite a successful group of creatures) the average temperatures of the land and sea were much higher than they are now. This resulted of course in a much different array of plants and animals.

As for recent dinosaur study, it seems that some 85% of (non-bird) dinosaurs have been named since the 1990s, so those few I remember from school have been joined by hundreds more. The book goes into dinosaur physiology and using computer models, shows how dinosaurs probably moved and therefore how they lived and what they ate. Many of the models you see in natural history museums are incorrect even if the bones are genuine or cast from real bones, because they have been displayed with the hands facing in an impossible angle or the shoulder blades are too far apart, for example. One thing the authors are very definite about is that dinosaurs still exist, as present-day birds are all descended from dinosaurs.

It's really a treat to learn how scientists are studying dinosaurs now, using computer modeling, mri scans, 3-D printing and more. The only thing I can imagine would improve the book would be for the photos and paintings to be in color rather than black and white. I think high schoolers would enjoy this book with no problems and perhaps even clever middle schoolers would be able to learn quite a lot from it.

NOTE: I am reviewing an "uncorrected proof", so some of the things i say pertain STRICTLY TO THIS EDITION OF THIS BOOK. The reason i am not giving this version of this book "5 stars" is because NONE of the pictures/graphics are in color. I feel that color graphics would be very helpful to give perspective in most cases.

With 223 pages of written content, I feel this book is very thorough.

Dinosaurs for adults - great review of today's science

Despite the colorful picture of a dinosaur on the front cover, this is no book for kids. It's a great lay-person review of everything we know about dinosaurs. Or I should say, "non-avian dinosaurs" since the book is very clear on the point that birds are dinosaurs as well! You will learn everything from their evolution, how they lived, and how they became extinct. The book discusses not only what we know, but fascinating history of paleontology, from the dinosaur crazes of the 1800's to the renaissance in the modern day. While the book is written to adults, my kids were shoulder surfing and I read it out loud to them and they loved it. Also lots of fun photos and images in there as well. I'd highly recommend this to any adult with a passion for science who wants to read some of the latest research written in an easily accessible format.

Many applications are thoroughly investigated, such as the Regge problem and damped vibrations of smooth strings, Stieltjes strings, beams, star graphs of strings and quantum graphs. Some chapters summarize advanced background material, which is supplemented with detailed proofs. Constructive guide

Confidence isn’t my best asset. So you would expect, from a reserved girl like myself, it would even be more difficult to impress a very strict hiring manager. When I graduated with a degree in business management, I promised myself that I would apply for a top-notch company I could grow in. I had a lot of options but this one company is my dream. To turn the long story short, I sent in an application, and I have an interview next week. Thank goodness!

I decided I would need a few pointers to be more than prepared. So I scouted around Amazon where I usually purchase my e-books and found this one. It is a very comprehensive book. This is the first I’ve read on the subject of job interviews and believe all that I’ll ever need to read. I admire how the author provided structured steps until you get to the focal point. First, you’ll discover how to make a winning resum� (very informative, very useful), then you’ll be educated on the top careers today (consider this), and chapter one ends with how to be your best personality to make it that you’re the only one fit for the job. I especially like this part because it painted me a picture, and reminded me of the qualities I need to possess to win the interviewer over. A team player, flexible, optimistic, are some of the traits I realized I needed to work on so I could make it great. In the book you will find much more, and the author will teach you how to go about improving every one of those winning work characteristics. I learned the importance of body language as well, and that this could be a deal-breaker. I’ve been practicing in front of the mirror. I’m betting I’ll do well.
The second chapter of the book prepares you for the interview in terms of putting yourself out there for companies to find, followed by self-reflection questions before the event, and lastly, knowing how to dress yourself like a professional. To tell you the truth, I got this job interview because I made a LinkedIn profile! In all honesty! It really did work. So I recommend you to do that as soon as you have the time. The author highlighted some reminders before you go to the actual interview. I advise that you read through them and read through them again because I’m sure it would really really help. Then there’s the portion on how to dress to impress. This part – one of the most life-saving! I bought a brand new set of clothes just for this. I’m definitely wearing the part.

When you get to the portion on nail-biting questions, I tell you, you’ll learn and even laugh. There are a lot of questions in there that you didn’t realize hiring managers are trying to squeeze out of you, subtle questions that you think you’d choke on, but not anymore. I won’t go into too much detail, because I think that you should go buy the book yourself. It’s worth the couple of dollars.
The questions and answers I would agree are spot on and will certainly prepare you for what will go on in that room. I feel I’m ready. You deserve to be too.

I got the job thanks to this!

I just had a job interview almost a week ago. Guess what. You can guess right I got the job offer! Woohoo! And I have nothing but this book to thank for. It helped heaps. A friend recommended me to read it and told me everything I needed to know would be found there. I read it three times until I got the whole gist. I’m normally not the anxious guy, but this was a job I was aiming for since before I got my degree, and I nailed it!

The author does not disappoint when he says he will “enlighten”. I tried asking a bunch of people who have jobs and didn’t really get any clear answers, but this book did it for me. I am beyond grateful. The interviewer asked all the questions (except one, but I improvised and it was a cake) that were in this book. I was able to come fully prepared. First I did some research on the company like the author said and I wasn’t too personal in my answers. I placed my goals for the position and the company’s ambitions first. That’s how it worked out well I think. The book also gives a run-through on how to dress well. That, I followed down to every single detail and it seemed, the hiring manager (she) was convinced and even complimented me for my look. What the author also doesn’t forget are tips to self-assessing yourself. These come very handy, as handy as the answers to the questions themselves.
So, I’m starting in two weeks and I’ve never felt so accomplished. Thank you! And buy this book, trust me, it’s FOR THE BEST.

Educational. I’m all set for that interview now!

I’ve been surfing for a few jobs some time now. I let go from my last one. There was a mass layoff and I’ve been scared to push through with applications ever since. While I was looking around online for offers in my line of work, I came across this book on Amazon. I felt that I needed it, and it was only a couple dollars.
Well, I am mighty glad I bought this. My last job was my first job and I didn’t want the interviewer to think that I wasn’t good enough because they kicked some people out. But I learned that you just have to be honest with everything and say your real motives, that you are still willing try despite whatever. That’s what I learned.

I also loved reading the part about how to dress for the interview. Now I know what’s right for the occasion. Haha! Before, I didn’t care what the heck I wore as long as I was comfortable. I didn’t know how much of an impact it could bring to the interview. I like how the author states his advice. Well-explained, as if he’s gone through all interviews with no scratch marks! There’s a part in the book that gives you information about some of the jobs out there today. I think this was helpful because it also gave me a chance to consider other things. Maybe in the future. In total, I would really recommend this book to any job interviewee out there. It has all the questions you could possibly dread about. You’ll come suuperr prepared.
So I have an upcoming interview a week today, and I’m hoping for the best. Without doubt, I’ve gained more confidence.

Theodore Sturgeon (1918 1985) is considered one of the godfathers of contemporary science fiction and dark fantasy. The author of numerous acclaimed short stories and novels, among them the classics "More Than Human", " Venus Plus X", and "To Marry Medusa", Sturgeon also wrote for television and holds among his credits two episodes of the original 1960s "Star Trek" series, for which he created the Vulcan mating ritual and the expression Live long and prosper. He is also credited as the inspiration for Kurt Vonnegut s recurring fictional character Kilgore Trout.Sturgeon is the recipient of the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the International Fantasy Award. In 2000, he was posthumously honored with a World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement.

Stefan Rudnicki first became involved with audiobooks in 1994. Now a Grammy-winning audiobook producer, he has worked on more than two thousand audiobooks as a narrator, writer, producer, or director. He has narrated more than three hundred audiobooks. A recipient of multiple AudioFile Earphones Awards, he was presented the coveted Audie Award for solo narration in 2005, 2007, and 2014 and was named one of "AudioFile" s Golden Voices in 2012.

Harlan Ellison has written or edited more than 120 books and more than 1,700 stories, essays, and articles, as well as dozens of screenplays and teleplays. He has won numerous awards, including the Edgar Award, Hugo Award, an Audie Award for Best Solo Narration, and his fifth Nebula Award, breaking genre records. Ellison was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 2006. He lives in California.
