Not so Modern

Books details are good but technology is really late 70's early 80's. Though the publish date is 1994 it appears there was not sufficient update from first edition. Specific areas that come to mind are gyros, electronics, and controls and displays. For use as a technical reference, I was disappointed.

Author is out of touch

I feel that this author has no clue about teenage girls. It makes me wonder if she knows any teenage girls, or even remembers being one. Teenage girls do not wish they looked like Kate Middleton so that they can marry a prince. They want to look like Katty Perry so they can be a star and make their own way. I also don't think that very many of them wish that they can learn to cook so that they can help their rich mother who does not work outside of the home. She portrayed the character as if she was 10 instead of 15. I also have trouble believing that anyone in highschool really cares about someone wetting the bed years ago. The story was not a reflection of any teenagers that I know or even read about in other books. It took alot of effort to get through this book. The story was very flat. Her characters did not come to life so it was difficult to feel anything towards them, or to relate to them in any way. I also read "A week in December" and felt the same way. I find this author to be dull and boring and will not be reading any more of her books. It's just not worth my time or money.

Lacked emotion but still worth the read

Rosie Patterson is the target of a bullying campaign at her school. What starts as just teasing from a group of girls, turns into full on abuse. The ultimate betrayal that Rosie receives is her best friend and next door neighbor, Meg Giroux, lets slip a big secret that is used to humiliate Rosie in front of the entire school. This pushes Rosie over the edge and into a downward spiral and ends with self-mutilation. The aftermath ends up tearing apart not only Rosie's family but also Meg's. Both families must come full circle and learn to forgive and move forward.

I am going to be completely honest and say I felt no emotion while reading Last Summer. I was fully expecting to be torn apart due to my own personal experiences but instead I felt I was just reading a story. Chamberlin didn't pull me in. After reading the Q & A at the end, I figured out why. Chamberlin has never experienced bullying or any of the after effects., she has only researched it because she was asked to write a book on bullying. The storyline was well thought out but it is missing that emotion that needs to be incorporated to pull the reader in and make the impact that it should. I would still recommend readers to pick this book up just because Chamberlin does tell the story from many POVs and the reader realizes how bullying can affect the victim but also ripple thru everyone associated with the victim.

Last Summer - A Read To Remember!

This novel centers on The Patterson family and The Giroux family; especially the mothers and daughters. Have the events in this story destroyed the relationship between the families? I hope you get a chance to read this book and find out for yourself.

Rosie Patterson and Meg Giroux have been best friends for a long time. They have lived next door to each other for years. Jane Patterson and Frannie Giroux also have been best friends for a long time too.

Over the years Rosie and Meg have confided many secrets to each other. Both girls trusted each other to keep those secrets and they both have up until now. Meg is an outgoing young lady that can stand on her own two feet. Rosie on the other hand is a little more on the timid and laid back side.

It seems for months Rosie has been picked on by several girls in and out of school. Meg doesn't like that Rosie won't stick up for herself. In a moment that Meg instantly regretted she blurted out to the leader of the girls that have been picking on Rosie a secret about Rosie. Of course, the secret was spread around school by these malicious girls.

The damage done to Rosie was pretty bad. There was more abuse and bullying that came out in this book. I don't want to spoil it for the reader. I found myself wanting to fight for Rosie. I wanted Rosie to tell someone!

The relationship between Rosie and Meg and between Jane and Frannie is understandably strained. Will there be healing and forgiveness? Can Rosie ever trust Meg again? Can Jane and Frannie get their relationship back on track?

Bullying is never an act that can be condoned. I think more public awareness is needed. Parents as well as school officials should always be on the alert.

This is the first book I have read by the author Holly Chamberlin so I can't compare it to her other novels. I was impressed with the subject line that she chose for this book and I feel she did a great job getting her point a cross in the telling of this story. I am looking forward to reading more novels by her.

This book makes so much sense!

Can't stop thinking about this book

I got this book as a PDF when it first came out, but did not read it until I had the hard copy in my hands. I devoured it in a weekend, taking notes, thinking, re-reading, thinking some more...this book is great to really make you think about your WHY and WHO...being YOUniquly you. It's all I can think about, pinpointing down why I do things, who am I, who do people see etc. It's definitely a must have. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to be better in their business and in their personal life.

Good for content review, not so good for NCLEX study.

Not a bad resource for pharmacology class, but not a good resource for NCLEX study. There seems to be some inconsistency with the principles in the rationales throughout the book. For example, for NCLEX, you're not supposed to add anything to the question stem that isn't there, and you're not supposed to read into an answer to the extent that you need to start making up a story for why the answer choice could make sense. Yet there are questions in the book where selecting the "right answer" would require you to infer something that is NOT in the question stem, or make up a story for the answer to work.

E.g. There is a question about an obese person with tachycardia, restlessness, etc., shows up in the ER, and the right answer is that the nurse asks the client how long he's been taking appetite suppressants. Well, you could ask the client IF he is taking them, but there's no clear indication anywhere in the stem that he is; more to the point there are other answers that make sense, so why would you necessarily infer that the patient's problem is abuse of appetite suppressants when you haven't ruled out other possibilities that are just as likely (e.g. use of amphetamines)... The answer fits, but you have to add information to the stem that isn't there, and you could just as easily add information for other answer choices that makes sense... In short, the question strays from the very principles of problem solving that the NCLEX is designed to test, such as don't add things to the stem that aren't there, and don't make up a story for why an answer could work.

On the other hand, the content review of this book is very helpful. My complaint is that the questions that undermine NCLEX taking principles might just add more confusion and frustration to somebody who is trying to master those principles (and pass the NCLEX).

Needs updating

This information in this book will help some, but not all of it. The publish date is 2014 and some of the information is outdated which leads to wrong answer and false positives. If you are using this to help study for an exam then make your first choice for study materials to be your text book. Don't use this exclusively as some of the answer and rationale may be wrong now.

Just after World War II, a young orphan living in Naples comes under the protection of Don Gaetano, the superintendent of an apartment building. He teaches him to play cards, shows him how to do odd jobs for the tenants, and even initiates him into the world of sex by sending him one evening to a widow who lives in the building. But Don Gaetano possesses another gift as well: he knows how to read people's thoughts and guesses correctly that his young friend is haunted by the image of a girl he noticed by chance behind a window during a soccer match. Years later, when the girl returns, the orphan will need Don Gaetano's help more than ever.

"Man is a basin that collects stories - the lower he is, the more he receives."

(4.5 stars) Described by Milan's daily newspaper Corriere della Serra as "the only true first-rate writer that the new millennium has given us for now," Erri De Luca writes a story of Naples, filling it with well-developed characters who live through three different time periods - 1943, as Naples has its popular uprising against their German occupiers; the early 1950s, when the unnamed narrator, a young orphan of about seven, is growing up; and the early 1960s, when the young man is now finishing school and about to set out on his own. The novel moves back and forth in time, as the author writes an often lyrical novel full of noble sentiments and wise observations, at the same time that it is packed with details about life and behavior.

The young orphan grows up in the early 1950s without any real supervision, living in a back room belonging to Don Gaetano, the doorman of an apartment building. As a child soccer player famous for his monkey-like ability to retrieve the ball when it goes awry, he discovers a secret passageway into a grotto behind a statue. Lovely descriptive passages make the depths of the city, its sponge-like tufo substratum, and its coolness come alive, and when the boy discovers some books there, he also discovers a whole new world of reading. Another time, he also sees a beautiful young girl through the upstairs window, and she haunts his life, even after she disappears.

The author uses numerous flashbacks to describe wartime life in September, 1943, and as Don Gaetano emphasizes the lessons he has learned through this and other experiences, he creates a kind of daily catechism of his own, declaring: "The worst things happen under sunny skies. When the weather is bad, a person prefers to postpone an evil deed." and "A writer has to be smaller than the subject he is describing. You have to sense the story running away from him every which way, and him capturing only a part of it." The author reveals information slowly, always showing Don Gaetano's concern for the boy, and when the boy is seventeen or eighteen, the beautiful Anna, about whom he has dreamt for years, returns, and their meeting becomes the final dramatic step in his coming-of-age.

De Luca provides much information in few words, selecting perfect details, rather than numerous details, which elevate the novel. The observation that the day before happiness (when bad things often happen) is even more important than the happiness which follows; that Christianity is like a belt around the world; that heirs get rid of the books accumulated by the dead in order to exorcise their ghosts; and that Naples is "Spanish" (and anarchistic) in tone and is located in Italy "by mistake," all suggest much more than they actually say, a wonderful change from the overly specific and self-conscious style of much modern writing. Intense in its imagery and emotion, this novel reflects the universal longings of the main character as he grows on his own. Exciting on the level of theme and style, it is hard to imagine any reader not responding to the young orphan with empathy and warmth as he learns to understand people and to "read their thoughts." A Wonderful Reading Experience

"The Day Before Happiness" is a delightful read about a throwaway boy just after WW II and how he grows up with the insightful help of a local 'fix-it' man. The translation does not obscure the regional nature of Naples with all of its charm and tradgedy shortly after the liberation by the Americans. It is streaked throughout with hopefulness and an expectation of happiness just on the horizon. I donated this book to the local Library to help them expand in this time of severe budget constraints.I bought this book from Amazon and am pleased I did !

My rating of The Day Before Happiness

I read the book as a member of a book club. I enjoyed the writing style of the translation. The translator carefully chose his words to tell the story in the fewest words possible. Very compact, yet descriptive. As I was reading the book I wondered if the original language was as rich and beautiful as the translation. I also enjoyed the first person narrative from a young boy's perspective. The main characters were rich, beautifully described; I was able to identify with the boy and his mentor. I appreciate that the author uses the same translator-it is alomost as if they are co-writing the novel. I will definately read another book by this author.

I used a forerunner of this book when I was in graduate school twenty years ago. I pull out the current edition when I need to review basic skills for myself or for supervisees. Middleman and Wood do a thorough job of defining sixty-three basic skills for direct paractice in social work. These skills are the foundation of any professional counseling work, and their absence from the curriculum of many schools is too well reflected in the professions.
While social workers and counselors often pick up these skills along the way, the concise, straightforward listing and explication by Middleman and Wood is a better way to go.
I think any counselor or social worker would benefit from a review of these basics, and any trainee or intern who has not encountered this book would benefit from it.
