Excellent Introduction to Radiology

I used this book for my MS-IV rads rotation. I went through most of the chapters and I think I have absorbed enough from this text to judge it objectively. I found this book to be a perfect introductory companion for both medical students and residents. It serves to help you pick up on the most essential points of diagnostic imaging without delving into endless minutiae.

The contents are well-organized and the most common pathologies are both clearly explained and pointed out on corresponding images. In addition, there are quite a few very helpful pearls and mnemonics for rote memorization of differential diagnoses, etc. Some of those are awesome and easy to remember.

Overall, I have been impressed. Once again, I would highly recommend this text to senior med students and interns. Radiology can be so complex that, without learning the basics, one may easily get lost in its kaleidoscopic dazzle. This is where this text comes in. Besides, it may very well help you avoid feeling like an idiot next time you consult your radiology colleagues.

About the Author
Mitchel N. Townsend was born in rural Mason County Washington State, where he was raised on the intersection of two long family lines of dedicated hunters and back country outdoors men and women. He served 12 years (1985-97) in various Rifle Platoon and Battalion/Brigade level Headquarters Company HHC positions (S-3) within the US ARMY Infantry, US ARMY RESERVES Infantry, US ARMY NATIONAL GUARD Infantry, an Appointment to the US ARMY Infantry Officer’s School, with a final overseas (2) tour attached with Special Operations (Green Berets). His University background includes; Presidential and International Honors Scholar with degrees from the University of Puget Sound (BA), Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology (MA), has almost finished a second Masters (MA) from Gonzaga University Graduate School of Professional Studies, and a Doctorate (EdD) from the University of Calgary’s, Graduate Division of Educational Research with a combined cumulative Graduate School GPA of 3.95 respectively Townsend has taught college level courses both internationally and at two different Northwest Colleges where he recently designed and taught the first and only Bigfoot Courses offered at this academic level (CSI Bigfoot 2014 and Bigfoot Solved 2015) where he presented all of the current data as well his own independent multi-disciplinary discoveries. Henry Darrow (born EnriqueTomás Delgado) overcame life-threatening illness, crippling anxiety and prejudice to become internationally famous as sexy, complex "Manolito Montoya" in the western The High Chaparral (1967-1971). Henry Darrow lived it and told it. I wrote and researched. Together we strong-armed our nearest and dearest to edit, tell embarassing stories and tolerate the intolerable. In my husband's case, that meant living with a pajama-clad, coffee-swilling, sushi-sucking, bleary-eyed, antisocial writer. Henry was sure he'd die before it was done. He'd call and say in a feeble voice, "Jan, I'm getting older. I could go any day now." I'd respond that he was absolutely forbidden to die until the book was published. After three years of fun and toil, we were all still alive, married to the same spouses and speaking to one another. We still are. And we have a book about Henry's remarkable life which makes us all proud. May you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed making it happen.Jan PippinsAugust 2014

About the Author
Jan Pippins, a retired social worker and former law enforcement administrator, was swept off her pre-teen feet when Henry Darrow first galloped across the video range as Manolito Montoya in "The High Chaparral" (1967-1971). She says, "If someone had asked me to name the people I thought I might someday meet, Henry wouldn't have been in the top million." But on a trip to Los Angeles in 2007 she and the renowned actor not only met but talked for hours. "I wrote a few short articles about Henry for an online newsletter and he really loved them, but I was stunned when he asked me write his biography. He's an amazing man and phenomenal actor. It's an honor to be chosen to put his life story into print."

Jan lives on a small horse farm in Louisiana with many cats, two dogs and her extremely patient and almost saintly husband Mike who owes her big-time for saying this. Jan and Mike have a beautiful grown and married daughter who should call home more often and gorgeous baby granddaughter who is still too young to sit up by herself, much less dial the phone or use Skype.

Man of Courage

I never read celebrity books, but this is not the usual celebrity expose. This is an insightful book, full of wonderful stories, many of which Mr. Darrow happily tells on himself. I loved the story about Darrow, an acrophobic actor, negotiating ladders in the filming of Badge 373. He and coauthor Jan Pippins allow us to live through experiences, auditions, performances and filmings with a real sense of immediacy. The book shares the joy with which he plies his craft and unleashes his creativity. The vitality of this actor's life shines through the pages.

As a theatre director in an age when "stars" go through roles with faces that seldom move and voices that stay on one note, I watch reruns of High Chaparral with a director's pleasure as a myriad of expressions flow over Manolito's face and texture his voice, constantly revealing the inner life of the character. You need only to read the listng of Mr. Darrow's body of work and see a few of his performances to understand that this is one of the most accomplished actors of our time. The honesty wth which Darrow narrates his life, accepting responsibility for foibles and tragedies, portrays him as a person you really would like to know.

The book also provides insight into minority struggles in the TV and film industry that may have been alleviated by time, but certainly stll exist. As an educator and director of minority theatre for over thirty years, many of the barriers and outright discrimination Mr. Darrow encountered echo the struggles faced by many of my friends and former students in the industry. The impact this has on the person and on the artist always affects me deeply, and this was true as I read this book. The lack of bitterness with which he tells this part of his story is truly remarkable. If it were not for stereotyping and financial decisions made by executives about what the perceived white middle-class audience wants to see, an actor of Mr. Darrow's skill and talent would have received the roles that would have allowed us far more access to one of the versatile actors of this age. Hopefully the brownng of America will further diminish this problem, but that does not erase the "what could have been" that robbed our culture of memorable performances in series that were never made and roles that were denied.

Pioneers such as Mr. Darrow deserve our culture's gratitute for perservering out of love of craft and a belief that he could make a difference for future generations of artists. He has made a difference, both for the artists and for the culture. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand in a very personal way the life of an actor and a man of courage.

What wonderful insight into the life of a brilliant actor

I just read Jan Pippins book on Henry Darrow "Lightening in the Bottle". What a wonderful book! Couldn't put it down. Unlike some biographies that read like instruction manuels, this one is filled with heart and wonderfully written! What an amazing man he must be! Truly inspirational. I loved all the stories, but was particularly fond of the section on NWZ. Thank you Daryl McCullough for your insights. Trust me everyone, the stories from James Victor and Jg Hertzler are incredible! Thank you Jan for a wonderful book!

Fabulous!

I've been following Henry Darrow since The High Chaparral was first on in the 1960s. I jumped at the chance to get this book. It has numerous pictures behind the scenes of not only The Chaparral, but Pasadena Playhouse, the New Dick vanDyke Show, and his time with The New Adventures of Zorro.

This book provides a wealth of information about the man we first came to love as 'Manolito Montoya' - but there's much more to him than that. The funniest line in the book to me though, was from J.G. Hertzler (from Zorro) who said, something to the effect of... "a Mennonite Zorro and an Amish Alcalde." I must have laughed for ten minutes when I read that...my hometown in Kansas had some Regehrs, and Hertzlers, so I got a kick out of what he said.

At any rate - if you loved The High Chaparral or Zorro or anything else you've seen Henry Darrow in - you'll love Lightning in a Bottle. I loaned it to a friend from Arizona who also loved The High Chaparral...this comes out at a perfect time - as INSP is going to start running The High Chaparral on Saturday, September 15th. Finally - back on television. Maybe soon, the studio will release it on video here in the U.S.

A Theoretical Maverick at his brooding best

Although among theorists, George Herbert mead must be considered the "theorists' theorist," he nevertheless remains a towering enigma who marched through life to the cadence in his own head. A pragmatic philosopher by both training and intellectual predilection, and a life-long friend of John Dewey, Mead was also a brooding, pensive, tormented, uncertain craftsman, whose dabbling into Sociology turned out to be more important than the whole of his contributions to his chosen field, philosophy. He is known best for his ambiguity and for his paltry professional output owning in large part to an obsessive need to rewrite, rework, and massage his ideas until either there was nothing left of them, or they had either come full-circle and watered-down to the last precipitate. In the end, his endless massaging amounted to procrastination that left the task of pulling together his large fragments of theoretical papers, to his students and admiring colleagues.

That said, Mead is important not because of these eccentricities, but because until the end of his life he was a deep structure systemic thinker unafraid to embrace "cutting-edge," and sometimes even tentative ideas -- especially those borrowed from the hard sciences which often served as the bedrock of his theoretical enterprises. He is known best for his large ideas, such as that science is the best instrument we have for intelligence control over our environment, for promoting the idea that even discrete interactions are affixed to the larger reality in a holistic way, for fully embracing and then evoking Darwin's Theory of evolution, and for his almost maverick interactionist posture that went against the grain of established structuralist theoreticians. He situated himself somewhere between the American pragmatist school and the European phenomenological school. Thus he was an intellectual Maverick without being intellectually promiscuous. He followed science more closely than he followed theoretical developments in either philosophy or sociology, or on either side of the Atlantic, and was quick to adopt the changing worldviews of the leading scientists, especially that of Darwin and the Quantum Physicists.

Mead believed "intelligence" to be a verb and that "perception" by definition can never be passive: only active. To "perceive" is to be alive in the world and engaged with ones environment. According to Mead's theory, it is this "act" (of perception) and its emergent interactive and communicative properties that define social structure. Therefore interactions are not (as his critiques claim) structure-less: for process always precedes, is prior to, and is instrumental in defining form and shaping structure, Thus, following Berger and Luckmann's seminal "The Construction of Social Reality," fundamental to Mead's theoretical formulation, is the notion that social structure emerges from social process, i.e., from social interactions and communications.

Thus as a result, the "social order" too is an emergent property of communications as that process matures and evolves. This "emergent evolution of communications" definition of the social order implies that the "social order" is perhaps less well defined and has many more degrees of freedom than we might at first want to admit. What is difficult to see at the level of context alone is that the social order is very much a "negotiated reality," one in which the individual is "free" to break the rules of society as well as to help reshape them.

Modern societies then, according to Mead's formulation, are not static, unified, homogeneous, well-defined entities that dictate their rules from the top down. They are in fact congeries of bottom up sub level social worlds, sub-worlds that are continually coming into and going out of existence; sub-worlds that are continually being negotiated with those of competing interests and are being reified in institutions and social organizations.

An enduring feature of these sub-worlds (that eventually becomes the centerpiece of Mead's explorations) is the idea of social movements. Again "social movements" are systemic processes, and not always nationally or culturally dependent or determined. Nations for instance are not (as the common wisdom imagines them to be) monolithic units held together by a core set of values, etc., but are territories in which many interacting sub worlds exist. These emerge, come alive, evolve negotiate and then die. Thus evolution is not just an attribute of these sub worlds, but a larger and higher systemic process that flows within as well as above them and the societal processes and institutions they bring into being.

Undergirding all of these novel ideas was Mead's belief that Intelligence plus symbolization, plus the self-reflexive ability of man, constitutes the ultimate palette for individual self-creation and self-construction. A prominent subtext of this view is the notion that it was Darwin and the quantum physicists who released man from the shackles of determinism.

As a personal note, I worked under the leadership of the renown Professor Charles A. McClelland on the World Interaction Survey (WEIS) at USC., which (without knowing it at the time) was in a real sense a bold attempt to realize in the real world Mead's theoretical approach. We used computerized newspaper clippings of international events from around the world as a basis for measuring international tensions based solely on cross-national communicated interactions. Although at the time, McClelland's "interactionist approach" was fashioned after and grounded in the theoretical frame work of the General Systems theorists such as Ross Ashby, Ludwig von Bertalanffy, et. al. While we were remotely aware of Mead's work, it would have been impossible to see its full power in context at the time. For much of his work appeared as scattered fragments. At the time I had read Mead's "Mind, Self, and Society" missing the deep implications it could have had for our project altogether. The WEIS project did have some success (used as a basis for university research, in the intelligence community and by a few military contractors for a time and is still being maintained by Professor Rodney Tomlison at the U.S. Naval Academy) and then died a normal death. But what a missed opportunity!

This short book is primarily the text for Nouwen’s address on Christian leadership in the twenty-first century on the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of the Center for Human Development in Washington, D.C. His audience was priests and minsters. Nouwen had recently left Harvard and joined the L’Arche Daybreak community in Ontario, called to be priest for mentally handicapped people and their assistants. His life at at L’Arche offered him new words to use in speaking about Christian leadership in the future because he had found there all the challenges that were facing ministers of God’s Word.

In his address, Nouwen uses two stories from the Gospels: the story of Jesus’ temptation in the desert (Matthew 4:1–11) and the story of Peter’s call to be a shepherd (John 21:15–19). He states that he is deeply convinced that the Christian leader of the future is called to be completely irrelevant and to stand in this world with nothing to offer but his or her own vulnerable self.

He states that the leaders of the future will be those who dare to claim their irrelevance in the contemporary world as a divine vocation that allows them to enter into a deep solidarity with the anguish underlying all the glitter of success, and to bring the light of Jesus there. He writes that the desire to be relevant and successful will gradually disappear, and our only desire will be to say with our whole being to our brothers and sisters of the human race, “You are loved.

He writes of the value of contemplative prayer for the leader of the future, stating that through contemplative prayer we can keep ourselves from being pulled from one urgent issue to another and from becoming strangers to our own heart and God’s heart. He writes that the central question is “Are the leaders of the future truly men and women of God, people with an ardent desire to dwell in God’s presence, to listen to God’s voice, to look at God’s beauty, to touch God’s incarnate Word, and to taste fully God’s infinite goodness?”

He states that Christian leaders cannot simply be persons who have well-informed opinions about the burning issues of our time, but that their leadership must be rooted in the permanent, intimate relationship with the incarnate Word, Jesus, and they need to find there the source for their words, advice, and guidance.

He tells us that somehow we have come to believe that good leadership requires a safe distance from those we are called to lead. But he wonders how we can lay down our life for those with whom we are not even allowed to enter into a deep personal relationship? He tells us that laying down our life means making your own faith and doubt, hope and despair, joy and sadness, courage and fear available to others as ways of getting in touch with the Lord of life.

He tells us that the leadership about which Jesus speaks is of a radically different kind from the leadership offered by the world. It is a servant leadership, in which the leader is a vulnerable servant who needs the people as much as they need their leader. He writes that it is clear that a whole new type of leadership is asked for in the church of tomorrow, a leadership that is not modeled on the power games of the world, but on the servant-leader Jesus, who came to give his life for the salvation of many.

He writes that much Christian leadership is exercised by people who do not know how to develop healthy, intimate relationships and have opted for power and control instead. Instead, he tells us, the way of the Christian leader is not the way of upward mobility in which our world has invested so much, but the way of downward mobility ending on the cross.

Nouwen writes that Jesus sends the Christian leader out to be shepherds, and He promises a life in which we increasingly have to stretch out our hands and be led to places where we would rather not go.

The book includes a helpful Study Guide, which will allow you to build on his short, but powerful message on Christian leadership, whether you read this individually or with others.

Simple. Humbling. Transformative.

I read this for one of my seminary classes, and though it is short and simple, the meaning is profound. It's structured into three sections which are very applicable to any one studying ministry or actively in ministry. It's refreshing and a great reminder of God's promise to shepherds. Overall, it was very humbling to read to this. I recommend it to any religion or seminary student as well as pastor or church leadership. One thing though...I do wish it was a bit longer and would go into depth in certain areas. Regardless, understanding that it was written many years ago, the application stands.

Another 5 stars for Nouwen

Henri Nouwen is one of my favorite authors which is evident in him being the most represented author in my library. I love his extraordinary ability to write about deep theological issues in relatively simple and relatable terms. A skill he probably acquired working many years in the academe teaching at prestigious schools such as Harvard and Yale and then later serving at the L'Arche community of Daybreak.

When I saw that he had written In the Name of Jesus, a book specifically on Christian leadership, I could not wait to read it. Like most of Nouwen's works, it took me less than a day to read it but it is a book I will not forget.
The book is a response to a simple question: what will Christian leadership need in the twenty-first century? Though written nearly 25 years ago, Nouwen's words still endure today.

As recorded in Matthew 4, after spending forty days in the desert Jesus was tempted three times. Nouwen walks us through each of these temptations and how they are relevant in our Christian leaders today.

Anyone who wants to serve in a ministry environment or serve in any industry with a Christ-like attitude will benefit greatly from this book.

I am a big fan of quotes and my favorite quote from this book: "The mystery of ministry is that we have been chosen to make our own limited and very conditional love the gateway for the unlimited and unconditional love of God."

Lewis Mumford was one of the 20th century's most important philosophers, and the two-volume set Myth of the Machine (Volume 1 is Technics and Human Development; and Volume 2 is The Pentagon of Power) are probably his most important books: the summation of his life's work. In writing as elegant as it is clear, Mumford makes plain the death urge that has always underlain civilization, which Mumford calls "the machine," and later "the megamachine." This is a social structure organized not around any organic human needs, but around the "needs" of the machines that have come to characterize and control our lives. These are crucial, incisive, devastating books. I cannot praise them highly enough.

Reading this several decades after it was written (on the recommendation of a friend) provides some rear view mirror insight into utopian visions (or dystopian predictions) that did not pan out as expected.

Its worth reading, if only to be reminded of the above.

Rage Against the Mega-Machine

Nobody writes like this anymore. I hadn't expected the eminent urban historian to write such a brilliant paranoiac tract against the System and Established Order. Although often redundant, Mumford makes a heroic attempt at explaining the current problems of our times, with roots in the Middle Ages, and perhaps even the Age of the Pyramids. He echoes contempories like Herbert Marcuse, Erich Fromm and Marshall McLuhan, but instead of taking a Marxist, psychological or media perspective, he takes the more general view of an urbanist. The arguments are quite paralell, although considerably more holistic at times. One recognizes critiques that were earlier or later articulated by not only Marxists, but also feminists, environmentalists, and anti-Imperialists. There are also anticipations of the New Age Movement! (See Fitjof Capra's "the Turning Point.")In short, this massive volume impressively combines much historical and cultural material in its critique of Modern Western Civilization. Although the tone of the book is quite bleak -- we would all appear to be trapped in this Megamachine, the High Technology of the Power Elites -- one also senses a hope towards last chapters that an alternative is possible. He seems to suggest a New Age style withdrawal, rather than any kind of organized resistance. Draw your own conclusions.
