Do NOT buy this book in the KINDLE edition!!!
By JerseyPeach
Don't get me wrong. I LOVE the Norton Reader and every single essay in it, BUT I bought the Kindle edition and imagine my surprise when I realized that I couldn't change the font size to make it bigger so I could read without my glasses. Imagine my surprise when I realized that if I wanted the font to be bigger at all, I'd have to hold the Kindle in landscape position instead of portrait position - not comfortable and not good. If you're going to buy the Norton Reader, and I highly recommend the book itself, do NOT get it in the Kindle edition. It does NOT operate like all of your other Kindle books and I don't understand why. I have other anthology books that are "readers" and they all allow me to increase the font size to whatever is comfortable for me. This book - in the KINDLE edition - is a HUGE disappointment. Shame on you, Amazon! You should have put a disclaimer next to the Kindle edition so we'd know. I'm very disappointed.

The Master of Go, by Yasunari Kawabata

Go is a game of strategy in which two players attempt to surround each other’s black or white stones. Simple in its fundamentals, infinitely complex in its execution, Go is an essential expression of the Japanese spirit. And in his fictional chronicle of a match played between a revered and heretofore invincible Master and a younger, more modern challenger, Yasunari Kawabata captured the moment in which the immutable traditions of imperial Japan met the onslaught of the twentieth century.

The competition between the Master of Go and his opponent, Otak, is waged over several months and layered in ceremony. But beneath the game’s decorum lie tensions that consume not only the players themselves but their families and retainers—tensions that turn this particular contest into a duel that can only end in death. Luminous in its detail, both suspenseful and serene, The Master of Go is an elegy for an entire society, written with the poetic economy and psychological acumen that brought Kawabata the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Review
"This novel is one of modern literature's greatest, most poignant elegies" Washington Post "Kawabata's narrative spirals through the book's events in ruminative glides and turns... There is a kind of low-key daring, an austere, autumnal nobility, in Kawabata's tale" Time "An archetypal saga... there are storms and landscapes as cool, as luminous, as any in Japanese paintings and woodcuts" The New Yorker

Japanese Culture Go-go
By Bob Newman
In 1938, a go match was played over six months in 14 sessions at several different locations in Japan. The opponents were the grand master, Shusai, and Otake, a younger professional challenger. Kawabata, then 39 years old, was the newspaper reporter who covered the match for Tokyo and Osaka newspapers. After the war, he turned his reportage into a novel which still retains much of the feeling of reports. If you don't know the game of `go', played with white and black stones on a board, or if you are not at all familiar with Japanese culture, then this book is probably not a good place to begin. However, if that is not the case, then Kawabata's subtle depiction of many themes in Japanese culture and in human life, may give you pleasure. The sick old man versus the young one. Life versus death, even. The author wrote"From the way of Go, the beauty of Japan and the Orient had fled. Everything had become science and regulation." (p.52) Players worried about points, not elegance or dignity. Otake represents the new, the ambitious, the unrefined; the old master all that was vanishing, all that Kawabata mourned. As a novel about an arcane contest which still can bring out all these important, even universal, themes, THE MASTER OF GO is an amazing feat. If this sounds interesting, give it a try. You definitely won't find another novel like it ! Kawabata certainly deserved the Nobel Prize.

Record of a single game of Go
By Zack Davisson
If another writer has written "The Master of Go", a true story about the competition between the "invincible" Master of Go and a much-younger opponent in the Master's retirement match, and intense single game that lasted for more than six-months, perhaps they could have used the game to launch a sweeping metaphor of the fading Meji-era of Japan giving way to the modern era, or a struggle of youth and age or something of the sort. The game itself might have taken second seat to whatever greater picture the author painted.
Instead, because this is Kawabata, we have an intimate portrait of three people, the two players and the author himself, basic and alive and honest human beings. Of course, there is a bit of metaphor and conclusions can be drawn, but ultimately the three people do not require any grandeur beyond there immediate status as human beings. It is enough.
The Master of Go himself, the highest available rank in the official Go association, is a portrait of obsession and dedication. He is only comfortable playing games, and even amidst his failing health and the demands of his retirement challenge, he ensnares anyone around him in any game possible, be in Mah Jong or Billiards. His opponent, a young yet high ranking challenger, has fought his way through a year-long tournament for the honor of being the opponent in the Master's final match. High strung, and with health issues of his own, he brings everything he has to defeat the Master in his last game. The author, a newspaper reporter assigned to cover the match which is being sponsored by his paper, unable to penetrate the minds of the two players, lays open his own feelings and interpretations while retaining a newspaperman's eye for reporting facts rather than speculation.
Kawabata, being the real-life newspaper reporter who covered the real-life game, uses his simple writing style and honest narrative to bring to life this competition in a more riveting manner than any metaphor. Charts of the games progress are used to explain the moves, details are brought forth regarding the health of the players, and the history of the match. In amazement, he manages to maintain tension in the story even though the outcome of the match is told in the first few paragraphs. The chapters are tiny, making the book as unable to put down as a bag of potato chips, as there always seems to be room for one more.
Knowledge of Go is not necessary for this book, although a basic understanding of the rules will help put things into perspective. The translation is good, but I don't like Seidensticker translates Japanese games like Shogi as Chess, even though they are not the same game. The notes at the end are very insightful however, and help fill in some of the gaps of Go-knowledge.

Sense of reality
By Paul Miller
Kawabata is more difficult to translate into english than say someone like Mishima. He lets us view a pre-war Japan mind set that can sometimes seem a little alien to the westerner. This is his difficulty and his genius. The courtly aristocratic Go master playing against the much younger more modern challenger lets us see in microcosm the change in Japan from the pre-war aristocracy to a more egalitarian society. Kawabata is careful to show good and bad sides of both these individual Go players. Much is lost and a little is gained in this transistion for Japan. That is the impression Kawabata gives in this narrative of a late 1930s Go championship game. This novel is mostly non fiction and is told in a light aesthetic style. In reading this I am reminded a little of the 1972 Fischer vs Spassky Chess match in Iceland. The disagreements in this Go match of course were nothing to compare to that famous Chess match. The author was covering this Go match for a newspaper and he was on the scene as an eye-witness, because of this the narrative carries a sense of reality not often found in fiction. Quite simply a mesmerizing read.

So much confusion
By Katherine Caldwell
Mumbo Jumbo is book that can be explained in one word...confusing! The intent was good, trying to show how African American culture came to the United States, and how different cultures reacted to it. If you are lucky, you will take much away from reading this. If not, you will be overwhelmed with a wide variety of characters with strage names. Much of this novel is lacking punctuation, which is confusing in itself. If you can read the book and understand it, it may not be all that bad, but for the rest of us, I think we would all agree we could do without torturing ourselves trying to figure it out. However, if you're up for a challenge, this is the book for you.

VLSI Physical Design: From Graph Partitioning to Timing Closure, by Andrew B. Kahng, Jens Lienig, Igor L. Markov, Jin Hu

Design and optimization of integrated circuits are essential to the creation of new semiconductor chips, and physical optimizations are becoming more prominent as a result of semiconductor scaling. Modern chip design has become so complex that it is largely performed by specialized software, which is frequently updated to address advances in semiconductor technologies and increased problem complexities. A user of such software needs a high-level understanding of the underlying mathematical models and algorithms. On the other hand, a developer of such software must have a keen understanding of computer science aspects, including algorithmic performance bottlenecks and how various algorithms operate and interact. VLSI Physical Design: From Graph Partitioning to Timing Closure introduces and compares algorithms that are used during the physical design phase of integrated-circuit design, wherein a geometric chip layout is produced starting from an abstract circuit design. The emphasis is on essential and fundamental techniques, ranging from hypergraph partitioning and circuit placement to timing closure.

This book covers the basic algorithms underlying all physical design steps and also shows how they are applied to current instances of the design problems. It will serve the EDA and design community well. It will be a foundational text and reference for the next generation of professionals who will be called on to continue the advancement of our chip design tools.
Dr. Leon Stok, Vice President, Electronic Design Automation, IBM Corp

A clear sign of when a field matures is the availability of a widely accepted textbook. Finally, there is a well-balanced textbook that introduces the key components of a layout synthesis flow with sufficient depth and an eye for the context in which they are used.
It lucidly presents what any maker of chip design tools should have as a core foundation.
Prof. Ralph H.J.M. Otten, Technical University of Eindhoven

This is the book I wish I had when I taught EDA in the past, and the one I'm using from now on.
Dr. Louis K. Scheffer, Howard Hughes Medical Institute

I would happily use this book when teaching Physical Design.
I know of no other work that's as comprehensive and up-to-date, with algorithmic focus and clear pseudocode for the key algorithms.
The book is beautifully designed!
Prof. John P. Hayes, University of Michigan

The entire field of electronic design automation owes the authors a great debt for providing a single coherent source on physical design that is clear and tutorial in nature, while providing details on key state-of-the-art topics such as timing closure.
Prof. Kurt Keutzer, University of California, Berkeley

An excellent balance of the basics and more advanced concepts, presented by top experts in the field.
Prof. Sachin Sapatnekar, University of Minnesota

Otten, Technical University of Eindhoven)

“This is the book I wish I had when I taught EDA in the past, and the one I'm using from now on.” (Dr. Louis K. Scheffer, Howard Hughes Medical Institute)

“I would happily use this book when teaching Physical Design.I know of no other work that's as comprehensive and up-to-date, with algorithmic focus and clear pseudocode for the key algorithms. The book is beautifully designed!” (Prof. John P. Hayes, University of Michigan)

“The entire field of electronic design automation owes the authors a great debt for providing a single coherent source on physical design that is clear and tutorial in nature, while providing details on key state-of-the-art topics such as timing closure.”(Prof. Kurt Keutzer, University of California, Berkeley)

“An excellent balance of the basics and more advanced concepts, presented by top experts in the field.”(Prof. Sachin Sapatnekar, University of Minnesota)

From the Back Cover

A useful and well-written book for physical design
By Badger
This book gathers together two to three decades worth of VLSI physical design into a book spanning a mere 300 pages. However, this book's compactness comes not from a lack of information, but rather its concise and excellent presentation of material. What I most like about this book is that the book is a good launching point for learning unfamiliar subjects in physical design. One can literally pick up this book, flip to the subject of interest, and quickly understand most of the major aspects of that layer of physical design. It's *refreshing* and doesn't waste my time as other books have.

While the book is written to encompass an audience that is unfamiliar with VLSI physical design, it does not read as if dumbed-down or as a high-level survey. The book covers a range of topics from chip planning to detailed routing, moving from basic concepts to advanced topics that are important in modern physical design. The core techniques, notably the graph-based techniques, are described in detail and with examples, providing a foundation for the other sections of the book.

The presentation of material is straightforward and well-detailed, relying heavily on examples and illustration to reinforce concepts and help in understanding. The techniques described in each chapter are likewise described and illustrated at a high level, and always followed by a detailed example, guiding the reader through the steps both algorithmically and visually. In this manner, the iterative techniques "come alive" as the objectives of the technique are stepwise achieved. Interestingly, the end of the book contains *all* the solutions to the exercises found within the chapters--something I found useful as secondary examples to the techniques described.

For readers already familiar with some of the material, each chapter contains a large set of key references cited throughout the chapters. These references are handy, helping to sift through decades worth of techniques, refinements, and heuristics--as well as providing insight into how such techniques have evolved to address changes in semiconductor fabrication.

Overall, I am pleased with this book and have found it useful. Some of the points outlined above may seem to apply to decent textbooks in general, but really, this book is a pleasure to read-for-understanding as compared to other reference books.

Great textbook on physical design
By Artiga
I used this textbook to teach a graduate level CAD course. It is a comprehensive study of both the classical and recent works on physical design algorithms.

The book is well written, and is easy to understand for students with little background in the area. The slides provided are also very helpful.

Great textbook for VLSI CAD classes
By Peter_BSH
I have been searching for a good textbook for my VLSI CAD classes for years. With this book I finally found it. Well structured, good explanations, even a complete slide set (PPT and PDF) for all the chapters is available via the author’s book site… I can recommend to anyone teaching EDA to consider this as THE textbook.

Henry J. Kaiser: Builder in the Modern American West (American Studies Series), by Mark S. Foster

In the 1940s Henry J. Kaiser was a household name, as familiar then as Lee Iacocca and Donald Trump are now. Like a Horatio Alger hero, Kaiser rose from lower-middle-class origins to become an enormously wealthy entrepreneur, building roads, bridges, dams, and housing. He established giant businesses in cement, aluminum, chemicals, steel, health care, and tourism. During World War II, his companies built cargo planes and Liberty ships. After the war, he manufactured the Kaiser-Frazer automobiles. Along the way, he also became a major force in the development of the western United States, including Hawaii. Henry J. Kaiser: Builder in the Modern American West is the first biography of this remarkable man. Drawing on a wealth of archival material never before utilized, Mark Foster paints an evenhanded portrait of a man of driving ambition and integrity, perhaps the ultimate can-do capitalist. He covers Kaiser's entire life (1882-1967), emphasizing many business ventures. He demonstrates that Kaiser was the prototypical frontier entrepreneur who often used government and union support to tame the wilderness.

From Library Journal
Kaiser (1882-1967) was a captain of industry whose playing field spanned many sectors of the American economy--dam and road building, shipbuilding, steel, aviation, and more. His standing as a lesser-known in a business pantheon that would include such names as Ford and Carnegie makes this work of some scholarly importance. With emphasis on Kaiser's activities in the American West, this first published biography is a painstaking work of research. However, for the average reader, especially one out of touch with Kaiser's most innovative era (1930s and 1940s), the translation from reams of research to text loses excitement. Academic and comprehensive business or American studies collections should consider.

Westward Ho !!
By Steve Cooper
Kaiser could not have built all that we have had he lived today. Surmounted so many, many obstacles without a college degree. Basically single mindedly brought the Western states into what it is today.
