More like a journal than a history.

This isn't a history of vaccines. it isn't even a scientific discussion of the pros and cons of vaccinating your kids. What is it, then? It's one persons reflections on their journey through the process of getting a kid their shots. Biss is more sympathetic to people who decide to skip immunizing their kids than some would like, but she does cover the negative side of that decision. It's well written and an easy read.

I can't give it 5 stars, because Biss could have given us a broader perspective on the history and science of vaccines than she did. Instead, she spends time reflecting on the burdens of 21st century parenting. So she should, but the percentage devoted to this is too high.

Perhaps my expectations were the problem. It seems everyone had this as a top ten book of the year. It was a good book, I'm glad I read it, I don't feel cheated and I would recommend it to you. But - it's not great. Very good. Not top ten great.

I bought this book because a link to it showed up on my Twitter feed, it sounded like an interesting subject, and I enjoyed the sample excerpt. Remarkably, it appears to be the first proper exploration of the cultural phenomenon that is the Epic Fail. I'm like, WTF?

Anyway, this brief ebook far exceeded my expectations, offering a very thoughtful and articulate analysis of a particular category of hubris, and of its often cruel aftermath. The author builds each chapter around a particular exemplum of Epic Failure, drawing not only on the internet, but also the cultural oddities of yesteryear, and events from his own past. Though eclectic, occasionally anecdotal, and often very, very funny, the book never feels scattered or unserious. Thought-provoking read.

Hopefully this book will one day be on a required reading list for people applying to be allowed to use the internet.

Intelligent cultural critique intelligently written

With "Epic Fail," Mark O'Connell has rocketed to the top (or near-top) of my Authors To Watch list. Although he has written for various outlets including The Millions, Slate, The Guardian, etc., this was the first longform piece of his I've read, and I was completely dazzled.

"Epic Fail" is intelligent cultural critique intelligently written. Like others, I read (rather, devoured) it in one sitting; I was frequently nodding in agreement and even more frequently making notes in order to preserve O'Connell's fresh insights and adroit prose. I normally hesitate to bestow five-star reviews, but for my part "Epic Fail" is a no-brainer. I've already recommended the essay both publicly and privately.

To those who wish it had more of a "conclusion" or final chapter: I found that each chapter contained its own conclusions and that the piece as a whole stands on its own without need for a summation. Even those chapters that end on an ambiguous note are done so (in my opinion) intentionally -- requiring the reader to wrestle with the questions and come to his or her own conclusions.

Do not be fooled; although it may look like it, this is not brainless BuzzFeed-lit. "Epic Fail" is an engaging and erudite discourse in pop clothing.

A Scholarly Analysis of the Essence of Badness

Well, I loved the books "Star-Spangled Kitsch" and "The Incomplete Book of Failures," too. O'Connell nails the topic of why awful writers, artists, musicians, and film makers are so compelling and, in their own perverse way, eternal. I mean, Amanda Ros and Julia A. Moore are perennial favorites of mine (I gave their books out for Christmas 2013 (repeatedly)). In some ways, the author discusses the nature of creativity and the artists' perspectives. When I circulated my first screenplay, which actually got some attention in Hollywood, I honestly did not know if it was any good. Julia and Amanda had no such doubts about their work. (Julia A. Moore (aka "The Sweet Singer of Michigan") had revenge on her critics: "The editors that have spoken against my work have went beyond reason." (Take that!))

Created to enjoy God

This book challenged me when I read the first couple of chapters, and keeps challenging me even when I stop reading. It may be simple, but it's true: we are created to know God, and knowing God changes everything. My own personal hunger for more of God has intensified as I spent time meditating on the Scriptures and real-life examples that Antonio writes about. "In Your Presence is fullness of joy" - how we need that joy today, when our ears are filled with news of violence and fear! I thank God for Antonio's challenge to me, personally, and to all of us who feel drawn to take the plunge into the wild depths of God's Love!

Antonio's book is a "Now Word" for such a time as this! It is a word for those who already have a loving relationship with Our Lord as well as those who are searching for answers.

If you are looking for deeper insight into the heart of God I highly recommend this book. Antonio Baldovinos has wisdom and passion for the things of God that is rarely seen in this day and age. I was thoroughly blessed to read this book. My favourite chapters were "The mystery of Jesus" and "filled to overflowing". Be blessed!

They developed a unified dialect that was distinct from Castilian Spanish. After the expulsion of the Jews in 1492, this language became part of the 'Iberian Heritage' of the Sephardim throughout the world. Today, although the language is in danger of extinction, it is experiencing a revival.

I was very excited to order this book. I have been wanting to learn the language that many family speaks for awhile but have never been able to find anything that would allow me to learn since it is such an uncommon language. I haven't gotten very far in the book but I'm wishing is was bigger, but then again it is only a beginner's book. It seems to cover a wide range of topics and I'm excited to listen to the CD's. I think it is helpful if you have some experience with another foreign language first, just to get used to some of the ideas, like feminine and masculine words, which isn't really a concept we have in the english language.

For some, a pain-free life is only a memory, but it doesn't have to be. Through my experience in healing my own back pain, coupled with extensive training and research, I have developed a technique to alleviate back pain--the Gokhale Method. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to help thousands of people re-learn the way their bodies were designed to move--gracefully and with ease. I have spent fifteen years teaching the technique, honing it for clarity and efficiency, and am delighted to present it here for general use. Many physicians now refer their back patients to me, and almost all the patients start to improve from the first lesson. In many cases the results are dramatic (see page 24). But then there are the people who can't come to see me, people who call me from the East Coast or the Midwest, perhaps friends or relatives of my patients, who are suffering terribly and need help. For years, I have wished there were a book that I could send them with step-by-step instructions and demonstrations of my technique. And here it is.

Esther Gokhale's book "8 Steps to a Pain Free Back" is a marvel.. At first glance it appears to be just another self help book on how to relieve common back pain. Upon reading it however, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this is the most comprehensive and helpful book I have yet come across. Gokhale's technique which is grounded in sound anthropological study; as she explains, our back problems are largely the result of our cultural habits. Apparently, only five to ten percent of people in certain other countries suffer from back pain, yet in American that number jumps to almost ninety percent. Why such a difference? Ms. Gokhale explains that poor habits and incorrect training are to blame; and her technique for proper posture goes way beyond conventional American teachings. A victim of debilitating back pain and surgery herself, Ms. Gokhale both understands the pain many of us are going through, and genuinely wants to help.
Her book is wonderfully illustrated with the most specific "how to" techniques I have encountered. She not only guides the reader through not only what to do and what you should be feeling, but also explains symptoms of overdoing any given technique. She identifies specific muscles that need to be engaged for stability and strength in support of the discs. The book explains safe techniques for sitting, lying, bending, lifting and walking, activities we do all day long. She shows us how to preserve our knees and protect our hips as we age. As a person who has been doing yoga and seeing chiropractors for years in an attempt to overcome my own back injuries, I can safely say that this book has been incredibly effective in allowing me to resume a normal, pain free lifestyle. Once you begin integrating Ms. Gokhale's methods into your life you will be hooked and find yourself making corrections to your positioning all day long. I highly recommend this book; it will create great habits that will last a lifetime.

A simple, elegant solution

This book offers a natural, simple solution to chronic back pain. No special machines or contraptions or surgeries are required. Instead it teaches healthy posture. Esther Gohkale studied posture in countries such as India, Burkina Faso, and Portugal, where people have very back-demanding life styles, but suffer very little back injury or pain. Her book offers an anthropological study, with color photographs of beautiful, healthy backs from around the world, in ancient and modern times. She offers clear, simple instructions to help anyone achieve healthy, pain-free posture.

I've tried chiropractors, massage, physical therapy, yoga, and Pilates for my chronic back pain, and each helps to a degree, but none eliminated the painful "bungee" cord running between my shoulder blade and spine. Gokhale's methods of "stretch sitting" and "stretch lying" have provided me the most lasting relief of anything I've tried, and they are the simplest techniques of all!

This book is well worth the investment--it's only a fraction of the cost of a massage or chiropractic visit, and it's provides fascinating reading and vital healing. Best of all, it extends hope that anyone can free themselves from chronic pain, no matter how cramped or stooped you've become.

Very Good Book Easy to read and understand, A must have if you suffer back and neck pain !!!

Awesome Book.. I wish they would have taught some of this back when I first entered workers comp/chronic pain management.. Would probably have saved me years of pain and I most likely would be much further along than where I am now, having to start from.
I started to notice some results from the very first step.. and at least for myself, I would highly recommend the sitstretch pillow that is mentioned in the book.. It has made a world of difference in being able to sit and drive for short and or prolonged periods in a much more and almost pain free manner.. I used to dread even a 5-10 minute drive, now I almost look forward and enjoy them again.. and that is a lot to be said after 10 years of being very limited to bed and chair..
this is more than a posture book.. I have heard many times throughout my life sit up straight.. dont slouch etc.. but only ever managed to be able to do so for short periods as it felt unnatural and there was just not a lot of information given behind why..
this book not only goes into why we should use these methods, but how.. it is very detailed with lots of useful photos and diagrams. Definitely one to keep in your toolbox of useful things that work.. at least for me in my situation.. good luck..
