About the Author
Jim Perry is a Professor of Management Information Systems at the University of San Diego, School of Business. He is the author of over sixty-five textbooks and trade books. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the Pennsylvania State University and a B.S. in mathematics from Purdue University.

Richard Newmark is a Professor of Accounting in the Kenneth W. Monfort College of Business at the University of Northern Colorado. He is the author or co-author of over a dozen articles and three dozen presentations on accounting information systems, teaching pedagogy, distance learning, technology in the classroom, and taxation. Rick is has served on the Board of the AIS Educators Association for the past six years and is currently Research Committee Chair for the American Accounting Association's Strategic and Emerging Technology Section. He holds a Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Miami, a Master of Science in Taxation from the University of Miami, and a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Florida. Rick has worked as a CPA for international and local CPA firms prior to entering academia.

Full of Typos
By Austin H
I normally avoid reviews of textbooks I had to buy for a class, but this book is worse than any of the other textbooks I've seen. The material itself is fine and sometimes interesting, but the book has dozens of typos. These weren't merely incorrect spellings, but large mistakes that completely changed the meaning of the sentence. The students in my class frequently had trouble figuring out what the book meant to say when an incorrect name or amount was given. At one point, all the students thought that we were doing an assignment wrong because the pictures in the book were based on different tables than the ones provided by the publishers for us to use. Hopefully these typos and mistakes will be fixed in the next edition. Hopefully someone will bother to proofread the next edition before publishing it, since this edition clearly wasn't proofread.

Worth the cost, but not written for the layman.

The good: Information dense introduction to jet engines. Written for engineers and others with a basic understanding of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics.

The bad: College level text written for engineers and others with a basic understanding of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics. If your technical education consists of Popular Science and Wikipedia, buy a different book.

Overall: Worth the cost.

Pretty techy...

Quite techy, despite the assurance in the preface that "no maths" will be involved. Not sure what he calls two full pages of equations on supersonic computational fluid dynamics, if not "maths." In fact, the book is heavy on supersonic flow, how to change engine design to mitigate shockwaves, etc. It;s this author's field, and it shows. Definitely assumes an engineering background and a solid knowledge of physics and undergraduate-level math for those in the sciences.

British civil servant Fraser offers a thorough, scholarly survey of the origins and history of the Gypsies, the wandering pilgrims who arrived in the Balkans during the Middle Ages and gradually spread over Europe and beyond. In an academic but readable style, he writes of the Gypsies' linguistic and anthropological background, their migrations through Persia and Europe, the 15th-century persecution of them and their attempts to survive repressive legislation. In the 18th and 19th centuries, attitudes toward the Gypsies became somewhat more benign, though the Gypsies continued to resist assimilation. Fraser mentions that Gypsies joined the waves of immigrants to the United States but does not elaborate on their experiences here. After discussing Nazi repression and extermination of Gypsies, he addresses current conditions: migrations are spurred primarily by economic concerns, pentecostal Christianity is becoming popular and Gypsies are forming political organizations. Since their unexplained appearance in Europe over nine centuries ago, the gypsies have refused to fall in with conventional settled life. They remain a people whose culture and customs are beset with misunderstanding, and who cling to their distinct identity in the teeth of persistent rejection and pressure to conform. This book describes their history.

The book opens with an investigation of gypsy origins in India. The author then traces the gypsy migration from the early Middle Ages to the present, through the Middle East, Europe and the world. Throughout their known history they have been renowned for their music, metal working, fortune-telling, healing and horse-dealing; but from the outset they outraged the prejudices of the populations they encountered: they were enslaved, harrassed, outlawed and hunted. Yet against all the odds the gypsies have survived, preserving a distinctive heritage and culture that transcends national boundaries. How they did so is the compelling theme of this book.

This new paperback edition has been revised to take account of recent research and of the political changes in Eastern Europe, which have sadly been followed by a resurgence of Gypsy persecution in a number of countries.

Informative, but lacking first person insights.

I am glad I read this book--for the most part it provided what I was after. It gives a good overview of Gypsie history from what is thought to be their beginnings to the present. I was disapointed that Gypsie migration to the US is only briefly mentioned, with nothing on the status of contemporary Gypsie life here. I was very disapointed that the author could not personalize what the Gypsies went through. I realize that due to the high levels of Gypsie illiteracy, there may not be much in the way of journals, etc. However, something could have been done to personalize their experience. For instance, the author goes in to too much detail about laws enacted by European Countries to deal with Gypsies, but does not discuss how these harsh laws affected them personally. I know more about Gypsies as a group, but nothing about them as individuals.

Not from Egypt but India.

i hadn't realized before reading this book that Gypsies are a people with their own language called Roma,and a distinct culture.I thought previously they were nomads,and i've seen all the stereotypes in movies about them being fortune tellers and all of their other dubious enterprises.This book shows another side,the Gypsies as skilled labor particularly in metallurgy and their exploitation by European powers and businesses as cheap day labor and then cast aside. The change I noted in the book was when Austria under Marie Therese began to try and deal with Gypsies as a people and not as a "social problem".From then on its been progress and then retreat the low point during Hitler's regime.The Gypsies seem to have developed their own methods of survival in a world not altogether friendly to their lifestyle. Their excellence at forgery left me in wonderment,particularly in regard to passports and birth certificates.A person could be a descendent of the Gypsies and not even know it,thinking they were pure "anglo" or whatever.that could throw a wrench in a person's geneological research.This books also uses lots of statistics to trace the Gypsy population and where they reside,they apparently are easily adaptable to their host nation yet maintain their distinctness.yet as time progresses it is even harder to distinguish them from the citizens of the states they reside in.Convenience and the uni-culture dissolves almost all the ethnic lines.

Great book!

This is a wonderful book for those interested in the history of the Roma. It does generalize some of the finer points of the history, but it still works because of the fact that the author had to deal with so much information to put into one book. If you can only buy one book on the history of the gypsies, this is the one!

Great story & illustration... word placement a little off

I ordered this book after my son fell in love with another book by this author & illustrator. The rhyming and storyline in this book is great. I love how the illustration evolves from real life characters to toys as you realize the story stems from a boy's imagination as he plays with his toys in the bathtub before bed. The flow of the story is a little off though. You start a sentence and it finishes on the next page. My son likes to pause to point out boats and ducks and what not's in the pictures, and so we stop mid sentence to talk about the pictures and it just doesn't flow right. He still enjoys the book though and asks for it before bed, "tugga tugga".

A must-have in your toddler bedroom.

I cannot get enough of the books from these two. The pictures, the wording - the way it rhymes. It's become a morning, naptime, and nuh-nite staple. They almost read like sing-song making them easy to memorize. I love that they play out the day from beginning to nighttime.
My son absolutely adores them. I cannot wait for them to come out with an airplane one - as he loves the train and the tugboat!

A must read for analog photographers

I borrowed this book from the kindle library and loved it. I will probably re read it many times. It has simple techniques that make a lot of sense and I'm a much more confident photographer. I will be purchasing this book and probably his second book about developing film. This is a truly no nonsense approach to photography.

Good, if you don't mind text only

I think this was a decent book to look into 35mm film photography. The info was good, but I think it would have benefited from actual photos to demonstrate the concepts. The author says he specifically didn't want to put photos in, but....it's a photography book which targets visual people. Also, what better way to validate the skill of the author than to have his own work displayed.

IF YOU DONT SHOOT FILM AND IF YOU DONT SHOOT BLACK AND WHITE; YOU HAVE VERY LITTLE CLUE OF WHAT THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY IS. GIVE IT A TRY AND START WITH THIS HELPFUL BOOK. IF YOU DONT ENJOY IT YOU CAN ALWAYS GO BACK TO YOUR VIDEO GAMES.
