About the Author
Nadine C. Duncan is an educator, student, and travel enthusiast who has been blessed to visit over thirty-five countries as of 2015. She was born in New Jersey to Trinidadian parents and grew up traveling to the West Indies every summer. Those awesome summers allowed Nadine to develop a deep appreciation for similarities and differences of the Trinidadian and American cultures. At the age of 27, Nadine moved to Abu Dhabi, UAE and resided there as an educator for a little over three years. That experience fortified her appreciation of different cultures and motivated her to visit countries she never expected to. Nadine currently resides in Atlanta, GA where she is the Founder and Director of a non-profit entitled, The PrOOF Project. She plans to continue traveling and exploring while inspiring other women to do the same.

While not an exhaustively detailed biography, I think this is a very trustworthy one, that moves along very well and does not get bogged down on any extraneous words. Guy Gaucherr's depth of familiarity with Saint Therese's life is almost as if he were a close friend of the family familiar with all the doings of the household and of the Lisieux Carmel. You get a sense of the personalities and relationships and what their life was like. In some places it is clear that a French audience is assumed because there is a presumption that the reader is familiar with some French historical figures and circumstances. Guy Gaucher, a Discalced Carmelite himself and an auxiliary bishop of Lisieux, is also very theologically qualified as an explainer of St Therese's doctrine and so of course that is handled well, but in-depth exploration of her teaching is not the focus of this book, rather this is a narrative of her life. I read this book in preparation for leading a study at church of Story of a Soul, I wanted a biography by an author whom I trusted would know what he was talking about and that would not be too long to read within the amount of time I had, and this was the right choice. One point that may be relevant to those buying for a library or something is that this book is not physically of high quality to last for decades, the paper is of a kind that will deteriorate with passage of time.

"Story of a Life," by Monseigneur Guy Gaucher, OCD, general editor of the critical edition of St. Therese's writings and auxiliary bishop of Bayeux and Lisieux, is a powerful framework for Therese's own "Story of a Soul." She writes, "It is not my life properly so-called that I am going to write; it is my thoughts on the graces God has granted to me." Bishop Gaucher tells, as much as possible, what Therese left untold. His astonishing expertise and understanding of Therese, his passionate attention to chronology, and his attention to detail create a framework for Therese's own writings. The more you love St. Therese, the more you will love this book. Also an excellent guide for persons or groups wanting to work through her life chronologically; one could use this book as a framework for the study of her writings. We are extremely fortunate the book is available in English.

This book, written by perhaps "the" foremost authority on St. Therese of Lisieux, is a "must read" for anyone interested in the life and spirituality of St. Therese. It provides invaluable information about the life of this Saint and about her relationships with her parents and sisters. In addition, the book provides critical insight into daily life at the Lisieux Carmel during the time of St. Therese. Highly recommended for a fuller understanding of this Doctor of the Church.

In introducing his seventh hardcover story collection for Tor, Wolfe claims to be in readers' debt. But readers may politely quarrel with this, particularly since Wolfe's command of English makes even the shortest pieces (some short enough to be sent in Christmas cards) avoid slightness. "Calamity Warps" is an agreeable find in the highly felix-centric sf universe: a dog story, and not a shaggy one, either. "Graylord Man's Last Words" is very Dickensian (Wolfe is a Dickens aficionado) though set in the twenty-ninth century (Wolfe is an sf writer, after all). "Has Anybody Seen Junie Moon?" has the flavor of the late R. A. Lafferty (who? Wildside Press is reissuing his work, most recently his 1987 novel Serpent's Egg). "The Fat Magician" features one of Wolfe's ongoing characters, Sam Cooper. "Game in the Pope's Head" has a historical setting--the London of Jack the Ripper. Wolfe probably does demand serious--as in dedicated, not humorless--readers, and his success implies there are enough of them around. Roland Green

As always, an excellent collection!

Wolfe once again provides SF/fantasy stories that range from gentle to horrific to speculative and does a great job on all of them. One story, 'The Boy Who Hooked The Sun' concerns a boy who actually does have the sun on the end of a fishing line and wards off the rest of the villagers by flinging gemstones of Atlantis at them. A near perfect metaphor for this collection with Wolfe the writer merged with Apollo, flinging bright gemstones of stories at the reader. Finding stories like these will make you wealthy beyond your years, so go do it. Go read them. If it's your first encounter with the stories of Gene Wolfe, how I envy you!

Great Stuff

Gene Wolfe is the perfect short story author. His stories are accessible to fans of any genre, but will be especially rewarding to fans of fantasy, s f, or magical realism. The stories in this book, although supposedly "new science fiction stories" really fall into all three of the above categories. I also purchased Wolfe's other fairly recent collection, "Innocents Aboard" and found it to be excellent also. Each book features a good mix of very short (2-3 page) stories, and longer, not quite novella length stories.

Wolfe's settings are diverse, ranging from a far off desert planet to a short story set on the far future "Urth" of his Book of the New Sun Series, to places as seemingly mundane as Houston, TX, or the set of a present dayish reality tv show. Of course, Wolfe's stories are never mundane, and it is in taking a place that holds no magic and twisting our perceptions so that we come away with a sense of wonder that Wolfe really excells.

Short stories that hold my interest

I also own "Strange Travelers," a previous short story collection, and I thought it was very inconsistent. One story would be fascinating, the next would be ho-hum. I'm pleased to report that Starwater Strains is extremely consistent, and almost every story in this thick volume was a joy to read. The topics covered are all nominally "science fiction," but within this grouping Wolfe manages to cover a wide range of topics, and the tone of his stories run the gambit, from more classic-style hard, cold space science fiction, to dreamlike tales that could be set almost anywhere, at any point in history, the future, or the present. As is usually true with Wolfe, there are also tinges of horror throughout - not Steven King style gore, but subtle, horrifying little twists that will burrow into your mind and stay there, rising to the surface every so often, long after you're finished reading.

Many of his stories concern a speculative near future, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that several of these had a strong social or political message about our modern lives, always elegantly included so that without the message the story is still interesting if you don't agree with his stance or don't care for politics in your fiction.

I'll finish by saying that after I received this book for Christmas, I had several mornings at work where I could barely stay awake because I'd been up until 4am the night before, reading "just one more story" over and over again. It's a fine collection.

Outstanding study

I am doing gerontology research and not only enjoyed reading this book, but appreciated the professionalism the author offered. The book was factual, well documented, and well written. It is good for the professional and for the general public. I especially like Ms. Loe's positive, loving, respectiful understanding of the elderly. I feel, the book's focus on the importance of independence, personal planning, and autonomy in a natural social setting were very important.

Many people who either opt to age in community or are required by circumstances to age in community, do not want (and may not accept) outside control of their elder years. It's important to understand that a business-corporate-structure (even a non profit) to direct aging may not be welcome or accepted by all seniors. If we arm people with information and knowledge to help them understand common aging issues, they are likely to not only age their own way, but age very successfully and well as most of the independent elders in the study have done.

About the Author
H. Michael Newman began working in the facilities group at Cornell University in the 1970s after ten years in the aviation industry. He is currently the Manager of Cornell University's Building Automation and Control Systems Integration group within Facilities Services and an ASHRAE Fellow and Life Member. In the control systems industry, he is known as "the Father of BACnet." He presided as the chairman of the effort to create the BACnet standard and has been involved with updates and improvements ever since.

The author, Michael Newman is considered to be the grandfather of BACnet, after many years he has kept pace with the development of his original idea. There are few who can claim such an accomplishment. The book is an easy read for anyone with an interest in automation protocols and from an unbiased source.

I bought this book so I could understand and write code to the standard. However it does not provide much information about it. If you really want to know about the programming aspect, Buy a book on ASN.1 and the standard itself. This book would only be worth while if it was $20 or so.
