Your prayers affect world missions

This is the original biography of James O. Fraser. It's a little harder to read than the newer biography, Mountain Rain, by his daughter, but well worth reading.
Fraser was led by God to work among the Lisu people before there seemed any possible way to do so. Living alone with them in the mountains, he suffered from lonliness and depression, even desiring to throw himself off one of the mountains. During that time, someone sent him some copies of The Overcomer magazine with the writings of Jesse Penn-Lewis. Through them, he learned "that deliverance from the power of the evil one comes through definite resistance on the ground of the Cross."
Having won the victory over depression, he began to pray with more authority and faith for the salvation and deliverance of the Lisu. Realizing that his own prayers were not sufficient, he began writing friends at home, sharing with them what part their prayers had in the deliverance, salvation, and spiritual growth of the Lisu. It's copies of these letters and his journal that make Behind the Ranges such a powerful read.
Within a few years, he saw a great revival work among the people, with hundreds becoming Christian, tearing down their idol shelves.
Fraser also had a tremendous impact on Isobel Kuhn at a meeting in Oregon, and later becoming her and her husband's overseer as they worked with him in Lisuland. You can read about that in her book, By Searching.
For Christians suffering with depression, I'd recommend reading Mountain Rain rather than Behind the Ranges. But for those who would like to learn more about the prayer of faith, either book will do.

Godly Man Who Ministered to Lisu people in China

James Fraser was a godly British man who ministered wholeheartedly and sacrificially to the Lisu people in China. He prayed fervently for their salvation and for God to raise up leaders among the people. He often became discouraged and depressed when new converts would fall back into demon worship.

But his persistence in prayer and fasting and in his mountain climbing in the Swiss Alps prepared him for an arduous ministry in the mountains of China. His prayerful persistence paid off, and he saw hundreds of families devote their lives to Christ in the years prior to his untimely passing in the late 1930s.

The book itself quotes extensively from Fraser's letters and journals, so it is not a smooth and easy read. But his life is inspirational, and his devotion to Christ admirable.

An inspiring life changing story.

I recently re-read this, as I gave my old copy away and just like a long time ago, it inspired me, it gave me insight, and I wanted to share this wonderful small book. J.O. Fraser was a brilliant engineer and musician, but gave up that life to give his life to the Lord He loved. He brought the Gospel to the Lisu tribe in the Yunnan Province, a tribe which was primitive and considered " backwards ". The Gospel literally transformed many of the Lisu tribe. J.O. Fraser brought the light of the Gospel and the Love of Jesus to a people who had never heard and who came out of the darkness into His marvelous Light.

Superb - highly recommended

I read this in a single sitting. Ostensibly it's a critique of the world of Michel Houellebecq but it effectively departs that brief and becomes an elemental consideration of the value of literature itself, the relationship between reality and fiction, reasons for living and disillusion, between the reader and art, and the very bleak questions these relationships pose when honestly cross-examined. Jeffery articulates the brutal, cynical red-raw hopelessness that distinguishes Houellebecq's work, in which all of the lies and protective skins which enable us to live our lives with hope and cheer are ruthlessly stripped away. However, Jeffery refuses to accept "depressive realism" as the last word and navigates with great humanity and lucidity along a difficult route to seek out a more affirmative resolution, finally hoisting pessimism by its own petard of uncertainty.

Ben Jeffery is young but he has already found his "voice". It is, on the basis of this volume, destined to be a major one in the world of criticism and letters.

Spot-on Critique of Depressed Art

The tradition of pessimism is long and hallowed in both art and literature. Heck, it's a style onto itself - I'd even say to be taken seriously as a work of art, literature is expected to delve into the dark recesses of nihilism, almost to a fault. It means the author hasn't compromised truth for illusory happiness. It means he/he has been willing to enter the dark side of life to come out with pellets of authenticity. Jeffery's observations on this topic - using Houellebecq's novels as a baseline - are both astute and profound. He rightly puts the finger on the self-centered individualism and materialism that underwrites it all. When the only real thing are deemed to be the flesh and the self, all of life withers away in meaninglessness in the face of the individual's inevitable death. All else becomes commentary, and futile commentary at that. Book also goes into cool forays about the role of literature generally, and spares no brutal honesty toward its chosen topic. Not too long, stylish journalistic writing, genuine insight - not enough of these books around. Highly recommended.

Magnificent

Please read some of my other reviews, so that you can be sure that I am not just a paid advertizer. The fact is, I have nothing but good things to say about this book.
I am a long-time student of Tai Chi, and the discovery of this book has greatly enhanced my practice.
The book is very eclectic; it covers the major traditional forms of Tai Chi. The diagrams, though they suffer from the same fate as any diagram of martial motions, are actually fairly decent. The author also has a very simple writing style which is both pleasant to read, and very matter-of-fact.
If you know nothing about Tai Chi, and are just curious to know what it is about, then this book may be a bit much for you. I would recommend "Tai Chi for dummies" or something along those lines. If, however, you have a serious interest, then this book will be an invaluable asset, and is highly recommended.

The best Tai Chi book ever written (and I've read MANY!)

I am not a fan of writing or reading reviews in Amazon.com, but this book definitiely deserves the time for me to write it and for you to read it.
I have read many books on Tai Chi and this is by far the most comprehensive. The author approaches the concepts on Tai Chi and Chinese philosophy and binds them together into the practice of Tai Chi.
A little bit of history, a little bit of classics, a little bit of self interpretation.
If you are interested in deepening your knowledge of Tai Chi (regardless of the style you practice) I recommend this book to you.

"Iron Felix" Had An Ethics!?!

Well.....sort of.

Felix Dzerzhinsky was a Polish-born Marxist revolutionary. As a young man he was active in the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party. Between 1897 and 1917, he was arrested several times and spent time in prison. In 1912, he was arrested in Warsaw and later sent to the notorious Moscow Butyrka Prison where he was kept in leg irons and brutally beaten by Czarist police.

During the February Revolution of 1917, Dzerzhinsky was released from prison by the working men of Moscow along with other political prisoners. He soon joined the Bolshevik party and was elected to the Executive Committee of the Moscow Soviet. Lenin soon recognized Dzerzhinsky's mettle and elevated him to director of the Cheka, the Soviet secret police. In this capacity, Dzerzhinsky oversaw the arrest, torture and mass executions of counterrevolutionaries during the Russian Civil War and the Red Terror. One of Iron Felix's more memorable quotes is his assertion that "We represent in ourselves organized terror - this must be said very clearly."

"Communist Morality" is basically a collection of fragments and aphorisms culled from his memoirs and letters to relatives. There is no systematic exposition of a Marxian ethical system. The passages are arranged in chronological order and dated between 1908 and 1924.

The most interesting thing to note from this collection is the hardening of Dzerzhinsky's attitudes toward his class enemies. His earlier writings discuss his love for children and his burning desire to end economic and political injustice. During the years he spent in prison, Dzerzhinsky never doubted the cause of socialism or faltered in his willingness to see capitalism destroyed. In one of the more moving passages from the book, he writes the following while in prison:

"When I think of all the misfortunes in life that lie in wait for a man, of the fact that a man is so often deprived of all he is most attached to, my thoughts again tell me that in life one has to love with all one's heart and soul that which is not transitory, that which cannot be taken away from a man...Love for suffering, oppressed mankind, the eternal longing in the heart of everyone for beauty and happiness, strength and harmony, urges us to seek a way out and to find salvation here, in life itself, and shows us the way out...[E]ach new misfortune is no longer a reason to withdraw from life.., but again and again inspires a man to go on living, to struggle and to love." (p. 16)

However, during the thick of the Red Terror, Dzerzhinsky was capable of producing prose like this:

"Wherever the scoundrel plants himself, he will be brought before the court of the Tribunal, whose punitive hammer will fall with all the devastating might and anger of which it is capable, for there is no mercy for the deadly enemies of our revival...The sternest punishment awaits them." (p.21)

One of the things I admire about Marxian theory is its lack of sentimentality toward history or its naive idealism. Noble ideals are fine, but they cannot be separated from real-world political and social contexts. While the Bolsheviks were brutal during the Russian Civil War, the fact remains that the White forces who opposed them were equally brutal and committed similar acts of violence against those who supported the Bolshevik government. So, in a nutshell, do noble ends justify violent means? This question in itself is idealistic hogwash. The fact is that the means are CONTAINED in the end. They cannot be separated. If the end is justified, then sometimes brutal measures are also justified for the sake of pursuing this end.

However, answers to these questions will not be found in "Communist Morality." One will find stirring calls to revolution and short passages of beautiful prose but little else. To explore further the ethical justifications behind Marxian thought I recommend both Trotsky's excellent Their Morals and Ours and Marxist Ethics: A Short Exposition by Willis Truitt.

An excellent introduction to Bible stories

This is a great book to introduce Bible stories to very young children. The print is large with only a few words on each page. The illustrations are very bright using mainly primary colors. Research has shown that beginning readers enjoy rhymes and my son is no exception. The stories hit the high points and cover the major events in the Bible. This is definitely a bedtime favorite that can lead to much more indepth discussions down the road!

I have purchased five copies of this book and three of the next level rhyme bible. We were given one when my son was two. He requested it every night for at least a year. The rhymes are clever and lighthearted while telling some of the fundamental stories of the Bible.

The book analyses the subjects at an amateur level and it is lacking in content. As a necessity of my doctoral dissertation I bought it and regret.The letter fonts are unnecessarily too big; according to me the real volume should be about 175 pages.Photographs and drawings(plan, etc.)are inadequate and print quality is not good.I was expecting a satisfying book.

This gives some good ideas for getting started in writing down stories, thoughts and memories. I searched and searched for something that would seem "right," and was really looking for something that would help me get stories down to build toward a memoir. (The books that help you write a memoir aren't really helpful.) This helps, but I'd like something "meatier." Nothing wrong with it ... just brief.

Learn the harp from a great teacher!

Laurie Riley is an accomplished folk harper. Her book is arranged logically, and you learn to play the tunes sequentially, starting with simple pieces and moving along to more difficult ones.
The pieces themselves are nicely arranged, and you'll (very) soon be playing with both hands - important to me, because when I learned piano many years ago, I never progressed beyond the left hand exercises! So my belief was, it's difficult to play any instrument that requires both hands. Not true.
The one and only thing I didn't like about the book was the pictures that depicted how to hold your hands. They look as if the harper's hands and arms are being held abnormally and are full of tension. Keeping your muscles relaxed is of utmost importance, or you'll never progress to difficult pieces where your fingers need to move quickly and surely. I wish Ms Riley would update these pictures next time the book is updated to show a more relaxed stance.
I'm well into my adulthood (late 40's) and have made excellent progress using this book (and the Sylvia Woods "Learn to Play the Harp" book, used in tandem). I highly recommend it!

Begin the Harp

This moves too quickly through the lessons. Accompanied by a teacher it may make more sense, but alone and with no prior experience it is, in my opinion, not a worth while investment. Many of the lessons include only a few lines of certain songs, which is frustrating if you want to play ALL of "Greensleeves". I would suggest "Teach Yourself to Play the Folk Harp by Sylvia Woods" book and DVD, especially if you do not have a teacher handy.
This book is good for a quick review if you haven't played in a long time.

Should Have Bought This First

I started out with the Nancy Calthorpe book but later bought this one because I was left with too many unanswered questions. I would choose this as a first purchase if you are interested in teaching yourself to play the harp. There are some good tunes in this book as well.

Emotional

This book is emotional, which is sometimes all a romance reader wants. For those who want a reasonably consistent heroine, this book leaves a lot to be desired. I started out really liking Heidi and feeling for her situation, her husband tragically killed, bringing up a troubled son. She seemed deep and mature, someone you could root for.

Then the hottie cop shows up and she instantly starts giggling, touching, flirting--only to brutally slap him down without explanation when he works up the nerve to follow up on these signals by romantically buying her flowers and asking her out. Then, when he comes back around solely to help her son, she starts coming on to him again, physically snuggling against him--and is infuriated with his perceived lack of a response. What happened to the woman I liked and wanted to root for?!

Then there's the hero of this story who has his own tragedy to deal with. This is the most emotional guy I've ever come across. He has highly unlikely touchy-feely moments with almost every man in his life, and of course every woman. When he breaks down and cries it has lost all of it's impact because of how emotional he's been throughout: blushing, trembling, stomach flipping, voice shaking.... This doesn't feel like the kind of guy who'd be interested in becoming a cop.

The story is predictable, but not obnoxiously so. Her vicious, gloating reaction to his pain when the truth comes out pretty much finished any sympathy I had for her. And his decision to have sex with her before making sure of his suspicions about who she really was is kind of creepy. In the end this fell waaay short. But I'm giving it three stars because I've learned that romance readers are willing to put up with a lot, as long as its emotional, and this story is very emotional.

If there would have been six stars I would have given this book 6 stars. Its deffinetly a 5 star read

If it were possible to give this book 6 stars I would. The characters are rich and fully developed.The story is about a woman and her son, three years after the woman's husband died in a terrible car crash. They meet a police officer who had spent the last three years after accidently killing someone. The three of them start to change and become happy again until....... You really don't want me to tell you what happens. I will only say when the book ended I was crying Happy tears, but I had also been crying sad tears. then it was over and I wanted to know more. I wanted to know what else happened to those characters, that I had come to love. Its well worth the read.

A new series, and I want more from the Kensington Family

This book is first in a family series, there are eight Kensington children so I am hoping that each one gets a book. Shane and Heidi both have tragedies that they are still grieving from when they meet, I realized that there was a connection in their history early on and it broke my heart. As they fell in love and you sit on the edge of your seat waiting for one of them to figure out how their pasts are connected my heart broke some more for them.

As an added bonus the point of view was alternating (which is my favorite) and a bit of suspense to the storyline. I normally don't write about grammatical errors unless it is really bad, but since this is a first book for this author I want to point out that there were no grammatical or misspellings errors that I noticed.
